And Then You're Dead Page 18

by Dan Latus

‘What the hell do you mean – leave it!’ John said, swinging round angrily. ‘You know what was in there.’

‘Leave it,’ George said quietly, but firmly. ‘Maybe it’s for the best. It’s over, John. You and Sam can get on with your lives now.’

It was a struggle but the anger subsided. Turning back to the man behind the desk, John said, ‘We’ll talk again. I’ll want compensation for the … for the furniture I’ve lost.’

‘Sure,’ the man, bone-tired of it all, said. ‘I’ll put you on the list.’

‘Where’s home, George?’ Sam asked as they got ready to take their guest to the airport.

‘Vermont, these days. I have a place in the backwoods up there. You should pay me a visit someday. All of you, including the little feller there,’ he said, tickling Kyle under the chin. Kyle growled in protest.

‘We’d like that,’ Sam assured him.

After a round of handshakes, George left them, heading off to Departures, and home.

‘We won’t see George again, will we?’ Sam asked on the drive home.

John shook his head. ‘I don’t think so. Not a man like him. But we’ll think of him, won’t we?’

‘Oh, yes,’ she said. ‘Every single day, probably!’
