And fully unsealed his doma.
Although in truth he had experienced massive amounts of power already. Kenji thought about what he’d accomplished using the Han techniques. As dangerous as they were, they were invaluable, able to even the scales against massive odds. Perhaps there was a way to make use of them without drawing the ire of the heavens. Kenji produced a brush and opened to a blank page in his father’s notebook and began writing.
“What are you doing?” Shinoto asked.
“Writing down what lessons I’ve learned,” he said. “About making use of the Han rope techniques as a mystic art.”
“A mystic art?” Shinoto looked at him with a frown. “Didn’t Olja just say that you shouldn’t use them like that anymore?”
“Perhaps not, but that doesn’t mean the knowledge should be lost. Maybe I can make use of it when I become strong enough. Or maybe I can find some way to use them more safely.”
As he finished writing he considered that perhaps he should give what he had discovered a name. “What should I call it?”
“The technique?”
“Yeah.”
Shinoto shrugged. “Strictly Forbidden Han arts? How to summon a Bakunawa in three easy steps?”
Kenji laughed.
“How about we name it after you?” she said.
He squinted at Shinoto in question.
She then grinned and took the brush from him. With elegant script she wrote something at the top of the page.
The Way of the Sundered Soul
Kenji smiled as he read it. “It’s perfect, Shinoto.”
“Just like you,” she said and kissed him on the cheek before resting her head against his shoulder again. “Just don’t summon any more monsters.”
He laughed again.
As he continued to stare at Shinoto’s script, an idea stirred. She was right in a way. If using those rope techniques had now caused him to face gods and demons, then why not learn how to use them properly to fight against the same? A new goal coalesced in his mind.
He would defend his life against Li Wan Fu. He would defend this realm against injustice and the forces of darkness as its Templar. But he would do so on his own terms.
He would do so…as a Master of the Sundered Soul.
