Sibling Rivalry Page 21

He was taller, older and grey-haired.

“Do you think you might identify him from some mug-shots”?

“I am not sure Inspector but I will certainly try”

Of course Janet never recognised a possible suspect from the photos.

Days later Janet returned to see Rene on his request.

"Miss Scott with what you have told me and what has come to light; my opinion of the whole case has changed. Now we believe that it was just a robbery which went wrong. The bullets which were recovered from yourself and Mr Heath matched the one which was removed from a known criminal who was killed some time earlier in Paris. So it seems the person who was in the cottage first shot this other man over a row over drug or money, a falling out of thieves so to speak. Also, the cartridges were already known to ballistics long before all this. What we do not understand is why you were taken away from the cottage, unless it was to be a kidnapping and ransom. You have already told us that you do not know if you were robbed of jewellery or money, Mr Heath was not wearing a watch and we did not find his wallet or passport so it was possibly a robbery gone wrong”.

Rene never pursued the case further; he was more interested in his forthcoming retirement and Sarah.

  Chapter 68 Why

"You will, of course, remember that it all started with me finding poor Brian Peter’s dead in our shared flat and that's how this story escalated to what you have just heard and I am sure you want answers.

  But first,

Sadly Lawrence Scott died later that year with Justine and his two daughters by his side. He did attend Penny's wedding and he was alert enough to enjoy it and give her away.

Rene and Sarah both retired and moved in together. She added a woman's touch to his so-called hovel and they are both very happy.

Justine calls in on them whenever she visits her grandchildren, all four of them, and yes there are a set of twin girls, but that's another story, maybe.

Janet married Jean; he is a really nice guy. Gabby, thankfully, never married Claude. She is now Mrs Patrick Scott and soon I will be a dad, but I digress.

It was some years later that I received a letter from somewhere in South America which told me this story, and to make it easier I will tell it from Peter side of it”

When I received his letter I could not believe that he had murdered Brian or that he had met him other than the day at my aunt and uncles home.

"As you know by now, Peter was transsexual and he loved to visit various clubs, and was always dressed in his sister's clothes, and even called himself Penny.

Peter was completely obsessed with his sister. He wanted to be her, look like her, dress like her. In the letter I received was a photo of Peter dressed as a woman and I would defy anyone to say the girl in the picture was not his sister.

Anyway, dressed as a woman he was Penny and he would protect her at any cost.

His fear of being discovered by his family was something he could never allow because it would mean her demise.

Nobody in the Scott family knew about his sexual preferences and nobody was going to know, certainly not his father in his condition or his mother who had her own problems with her husband. And Janet, God forbid. Janet of old would have made his life a misery.

Brian Peters and Penny/Peter had been in a relationship for some time and it was sheer coincidence that Brian was my flatmate. Had he ever seen Peter as Peter I really do not know. When I took Brian to visit my cousins he not only saw Peter as, maybe, he had never seen him and I am not sure he even recognized him. Sitting next to him was Janet or, as he thought, Penny his Penny.

It was all too much for him. I do hope that made sense to you, even I struggled with Peter’s explanation. I still do, but think about it a while.

Now as I have said, Peter’s Penny needed to be protected and as poor Brian had seen Peter and Janet who he thought was Penny he felt Penny was in danger of being exposed and therefore destroyed, this could not happen.

"Brian knew I would be with Paula for a few days, I dumped her, by the way. She was sleeping with her boss.

Anyway, knowing I was away with Paula, Brian invited Penny back to our flat where she convinced Brian to let her tie him to the bed for, I suppose, kinky sex and once done, well you know the rest.

He left our flat dressed as Penny and still wearing her white gloves entered a pub as a woman, found the ladies toilet and left as a man. Oh yes, Peter really did have nice legs for a guy.

I am sure the murder was not necessary. Why would Brian tell what he saw or thought he saw? He was also trying to hide his own sexuality.

But Peter/Penny was always a very mixed up young person, the letter was even signed Penelope Scott.

Will he ever be punished for what he did, they did, what do you think?

You may wonder why I never went to the police; sorry I had enough of the whole affair first time around, plus its family, I am sure you understand.

By the way, I have never told this story to Penny or Janet.

Do me a favour don't you tell them either"

“And if you thought that was the end”

  Chapter 69 End

Some years after Sarah had retired, she happened to look through a window of a small cafe in the centre of Paris.

Sitting there was Penny and Janet enjoying a coffee.

This was the first time she had ever seen the twins together.

For a moment she stood there deep in thought.

“Surely not” she said to herself, shook her head and walked away.
