The End
Author's Note
Dear Readers,
Let me begin with a disclaimer. I am not a mental health professional, nor am I educated or trained in the fields of psychiatry or psychology. I'm just a person who suffered with undiagnosed Bipolar II Disorder for most of my life. On countless occasions, I have been asked, "Didn't you know something was wrong with you?" The honest answer to the question was "Yes." I recognized my bouts with depression were extreme, but I didn't know most people woke up every day in basically the same mood. And I had no idea that most people don't hate themselves.
In high school and college, I felt surrounded by pretty, happy girls. At night, I would lie in bed and cry, wondering what's wrong with me. What I didn't know then was the answer to the question was me. My brain was the problem, but no one in my life had any experience with or knowledge of mental illness. I was dismissed as moody and dramatic.
Maggie's story is fictional, but her thought processes all originated inside my untreated brain. She was created to give non-mentally ill readers a glimpse into a world I hope they never experience personally.
But some of you, unfortunately, are going to read Maggie's story and recognize yourself. Please, please, seek help. Tell your parents, a friend, a guidance counselor, the university health center, your doctor. You owe it to yourself and the people who love you to become the healthiest and happiest person you can be. Science has advanced since Ella's day. There are treatments that can improve your life.
So, please, give yourself a gift and seek help. You will never know how amazing you are until you do.
Sincerely,
Susan
