They started to move, and he just closed his eyes, holding on tight to Jessica. Scott couldn't make out what was going on around him. All he was focused on was the woman in his arms. It was the woman that he decidedly loved more than anything else in the world. The woman that was now gone, no longer able to brighten his life.
Scott didn't know how long he sat there on the ground, rocking back and forth with Jessica in his arms. There had been several people that tried to talk to him, but there was no way he was going to acknowledge what happened. It had only been ten minutes since he had discovered her body, yet it already felt like an eternity. How was he supposed to go on without her?
There was a stirring feeling in his arms, and it took him several moments to realize that it was Jessica. She was moving, and there were some gasps heard from around him. The crowd was talking about everything all at once, rejoicing in the fact that they had been rescued. They were also mourning the death of the people that were lost in the mountain forever.
Scott couldn't believe what was happening. He looked down at the woman he had been holding so close for so long.
He couldn't believe it at first. He was looking at her, she was looking back at him, and Scott was still waiting for something to happen. How was it possible? He didn't understand, and he looked to Jake for answers.
Jake did not know what was going on, either. Scott decided that he didn't care. He pulled her closer and kissed her gently, making sure not to push on her in any way. How was she still alive? He had seen the hole in her head, but now it was gone. Where had it gone? Where had the bullet gone? How was any of it possible?
Scott turned to the witches and asked them the same question. He didn't think he would get an answer, but he finally did from an unlikely source. Or maybe it shouldn't have been so unlikely because it seemed like Evelyn knew everything. She didn’t disappoint him this time around, either.
“Don’t look at me for this miracle. Witches can do a lot of things but bringing people back to life isn’t usually one of them. I think it was her vampire side that brought her back.”
Once everybody got back to a state of clear-headedness, there was a lot that had to be done. The gang did not have a place to stay. They were essentially homeless, and the brothers were working on fixing the problem. They had secured an old hotel that had many rooms and would accommodate their large brood. It wasn’t a long-term fix, but Scott knew it would be worked out.
Scott was keeping Jessica close. He wouldn't even let her out of his sight for the first month after it was all over. He still looked over his shoulder from time to time, waiting for the ancients to come back. He dreamed about them, and he dreamed about human guards holding guns. Everything seemed more dangerous for him now that he had something to lose and someone to love.
Surprisingly, the baby that Jessica was carrying seemed to be doing fine. They had a healer look at her when they first got back together, and everything seemed to be in order. Scott did not know how he had gotten so lucky, but he knew that it was pure luck that made it possible for him to even have a family.
He was grateful for everything, and when his brother tried to talk to him about leading the Rebel Bears, he declined quickly. Nothing he ever did would have prepared him for his new life. Scott knew that it was going to take time for him to learn how to adjust to his new life. He didn’t mind spending the rest of his life doing that, as long as he had his Jessica at his side.
The Rebel Bears had been through a lot; they all had. The last few months had threatened all of their strength, and Scott was just glad they got out of the other side of it. When he was asked what they should change, Scott’s answer had been clear. Everything. They needed to change everything.
A few meetings were done to find out what that meant. No one knew what was going to happen next, but everyone in authority was done with the games. They wanted a legitimate business. No more fighting with other clans for a piece of the pie. Jake told his brothers that he wanted to make their own pie and not share any of it.
Scott had thought about the problem for days when it finally came to them. He had just the way that they could all go legitimate. It would take some getting used to, but there would be much less danger involved, and that’s what they all wanted at that stage.
The announcement of their new endeavor was about to come and for some reason, Scott was nervous. He wasn’t sure why, but he knew that it was partially because he wanted to help. The clan had been so great to him, and he wanted to help them in any way that he could. He wanted to make his family stronger, which, in turn, would make them all stronger.
All eyes were on him when Jake brought him up. He didn’t like public speaking, but he laid out the plan the same way that he’d laid it out for his brothers.
His idea was security, much like what he had done at the bars, though on a larger scale. Since the ancients were not around anymore, there was going to be a need for protection; magical protection. Scott wanted to capitalize on it, and everyone agreed.
When he had floated the idea to Jessica, she had been happy about the change. They had a baby coming soon, and they both wanted the world to be a little safer.
He moved back to Jessica and took her hand. She squeezed it softly, and he kissed it while his fingers stayed laced with hers.
“Good speech.”
He chuckled and pulled her closer. How could a few words and a hand make all the difference in the world?
Scott didn’t know, but he imagined that it was love.
