True Mate Page 20

  “Where are you?”

The boy shook his head. “I don’t know. Men left me here after they hurt me, and all I want to do is rest.”

I felt a pang of despondency as I listened to this. It was followed immediately by overwhelming anger at what had been done to this child. I frowned.

“I need someone to find me,” the small voice pleaded. “Please…”

I watched him hover in place, seeing the smoky-gray glow radiate out from the lighter, translucent aura of the specter himself.

  I nodded. “What’s your name?”

“Blue… Mama called me her Blue boy.”

“Blue. Okay. I’ll do whatever I can to find you.”

The specter began to fade. “Promise?” His voice was tiny now.

“Yes.” I closed my fist, thumping my chest. “I promise, Blue.”

  “Thank you, Vincent.”

  “How…?”

Before I could ask how he knew my name, the tiny ghost vanished. The room was dark again. I sat there for a few minutes, staring at where he’d been before glancing over at Romeo. He snored softly into the pillow. I noticed a chill in the room for the first time, and I lay back down, pulling the covers over me as I slid in behind Romeo. I wound my arms around my lover, resting my chin on his shoulder, twining my legs with his, as I thought about the little ghost. Perhaps Scott had been right…I was a conduit for this little one who was hovering between worlds.

I needed to do something for Blue.

I closed my eyes, but it took a very long time before I slept again.

Mendez family gatherings were always raucous and loud. Ricky stood in the kitchen peeling carrots for his mama’s stew as the screen door banged open, and the sound of laughter hit his ears. Seconds later, he was up against the sink dodging his three youngest cousins as they came charging through the open doorway. The three little boys laughed even harder when Ricky’s mom cried out and swiped at them with a rolled-up towel.

“Dios mio! If you make me spill this stew, I will redden your backsides!”

Ricky grinned as his oldest sister reprimanded another one of his nephews, then wiped away tears from his youngest sister, Carolina’s cheeks.

“Paolo! Look what you did! You got mud on Carol’s dress!” Lucinda swatted the boy lightly on the behind and he laughed, taking off out the door after his cousins where the men were barbequing.

Ricky stared out the window as he washed the carrot, noting how all his tios stood around his father’s grill with the spicy carne asada and corn on the cob. He had to smile. He loved his massive family, and for the most part, his whole world was right, when he was right where he stood, in his mother’s kitchen.

“Ricky. Leave that to us and go outside with your papa and uncles. The grill is men’s work, mijo. This is work for the women.”

Ricky looked down at his mother who stood barely five feet tall. She was round and apple cheeked and after having twelve children, ten of which survived infancy, she always looked perpetually tired. Growing up, he’d watched her cook and clean for the ever-growing Mendez clan without stopping. Ever since he’d been old enough to recognize her exhaustion, Ricky had tried to help her whenever possible. If that meant peeling carrots or doing dishes—things she considered unmanly—he was always willing. He loved her very much. He loved his whole big family. Then again, if people knew who the Mendez clan really were, they wouldn’t be surprised by the number of kids.

After all, rabbits did tend to breed like crazy.

Ricky bent and kissed her cheek. “I love you, mama.” He glanced up and looked out at the men again. Tio Roberto was laughing so hard he dropped his beer bottle on the grass. That just made the other men laugh even harder. Laughing, his father, Juan, turned back to the grill and began flipping the marinated strips of meat. Ricky glanced back at his mother. She was pleading with her eyes. He smiled and kissed her forehead, handing her the dish towel and carrot.

“Fine, I’ll bring them more beer.”

“Good boy!” Mama said, patting his cheek. “Bring them cerveza but not Tio Miguel. He’s drunk already.”

Ricky glanced out at the men just in time to see his cousins run by them. His uncle Miguel stepped back, lost his footing, and flew ass first into his mother’s prize vegetable garden, passing out cold as his father and the other men roared their approval.

“I’m gonna kill them!” Mama screamed, waving the carrot as she caught sight of the garden happenings.

Ricky grinned to himself and banged outside through the screen after his mama, fleeing to a quiet corner of the yard where he could watch his mother commit murder.
