Jack was stunned. He hadn’t known.
“I never went,” he said in an echo of a voice.
“Yeah. She was pregnant,” Col went on, the guard taking his shoulders. “Told me the week before I found out about the two of you. I couldn’t even be sure if the fucking thing would come out black.”
He stared down at Jack, who remained seated. Col’s face looked broken by misery. He succumbed easily to the guard as he took his hands and cuffed them behind his back, Col’s eyes never leaving Jack.
“I never knew,” Jack muttered.
“Well, you do now,” Col said as he was hauled to the door, the alarm raised and another guard opening it. “Let that haunt you like it does me.”
Col was dragged out of the room and down the corridor. Jack could hear his cries as he went along. He thrust his hand in his pocket and took out his smokes, popping one straight in his mouth and lighting it.
She never told me, he said to himself, feeling the weight of the latest revelation pushing down on him. Never told me.
