Flight of the Valkyrie Page 19

“Alright, Ian, we screwed up, we get that,” Tom said. “But hey, we took out a secret Nazi base and brought the CSOS a weapon that can be used to figure out an elusive energy source that could power the world for free. That’s got to erase some bad feelings.”

Ian frowned at him as he took a seat at the table. “It’s the reason you aren’t in jail with your buddy, Hammer.”

“Alexi’s in jail?” Axel asked, surprised and clearly upset.

Ian held up his hands defensively. “Jail is the wrong term. He is being kept under guard at a military base.”

“You know we could use him, Ian,” Tom said. “Put him on the team.”

Ian nodded. “It’s not my call,” he told them. “The FBI and CIA want to debrief and fully vet him. The President agrees.”

Dawn sighed. “Debrief him or interrogate him? Alexi’s like a child,” she said. “Like Rolf.”

Ian turned toward Dawn. “It’s not my call,” he reiterated.

“Okay, well what about these Nazis?” Axel asked. “The leaders got away and they took the Soviet agent, Sickle, with them. We’ve got to rescue her.”

“Rescue her?” Ian asked. “Axel, listen to yourself. She’s a Soviet agent. Let the Russians rescue her.”

“Do they even know what happened?” Tom asked.

“I certainly haven’t told them,” Ian replied.

“So no one is coming for her?” Axel asked.

Ian narrowed his eyes at Axel. “Maybe you need to worry about your own skin, Agent Smith,” Ian said. “There are several people who would like to see you charged.”

  “Charged with what?” Axel asked.

“How about sabotage, espionage, and I’ve even heard treason thrown about.”

  “Treason? That’s preposterous,” Tom said.

“You took an American asset and left him to be picked up by the Soviets and then you accompanied Russian spies on a mission, without consulting or even informing any U.S. agencies,” Ian shot back. “It’s not as preposterous as you like to think, Tom.”

“Well, the CIA and FBI can take their charges and…” Axel began, but Dawn’s hand on his arm quieted him. Axel sat back in his chair and took a deep breath.

“Look when Mr. X gets here, let’s just play it cool. He is the only real ally our office has right now. There is crowing to high heaven that the CSOS is incompetent and should fall under the purview of some other agency.”

“Is he an ally, Ian?” Axel asked.

“Well, he defended you to the President, underscoring your accomplishments and arguing that they overshadowed any sins you may have committed,” Ian shot back.

As if on cue, the door swung open and Mr. X stepped through, wearing a dark suit and tie. He stopped and smiled at Team Blitzkrieg.

“I’ve got to say, I don’t really appreciate your keeping Ian and myself out of the loop, but you certainly do get the job done, don’t you?” he asked with an amused chuckle.

“Well, we hear that the FBI and CIA want us arrested for treason,” Tom said.

Mr. X chuckled again and waved that concern away. “I wouldn’t worry too much about them,” he replied as he took a seat beside Ian. “That’s not going to happen. But we need to make it clear that this was a one-time thing. You simply cannot go running off on your own like that anymore. It worked out alright this time, but what if your mother had not been able to take down the Nazi bomber? D.C. could have been destroyed.”

Axel glanced at Tom and then at Dawn before turning back to Mr. X. “We didn’t mention that in our report,” Axel said.

  “What?” Mr. X asked.

“That Valkyrie is my mother,” Axel said.

“I didn’t know that,” Ian said with surprise. “She’s your mother?” he asked as he stared at Axel.

“How did you know that?” Axel asked Mr. X.

Mr. X laughed dismissively. “Oh, it’s probably in a file I have somewhere.” Axel stood and began to walk around the table.

“You are the one who has been feeding the Nazis information, aren’t you?” Axel asked.

“I will not even dignify that with a response,” Mr. X shot back.

“Okay, Mr. X, let’s start with a simpler question,” Axel said as he stopped behind Mr. X and leaned over his back. “What is your name?”

“My name is not important, what is important is…” he began, but Axel snatched him out of his chair turned and slammed him up against the wall. Everyone was on their feet now.

“Get him Axel!” Rolf shouted encouragingly.

Axel’s fingers began to crackle and pop with electricity as he held Mr. X against the wall. “Tell me your name or I swear to God I’ll fry you right here.” As he said it he shot a small amount of electricity through the mystery man’s body to let him know he was serious.

“Axel, let him go,” Tom said.

“Tell me who you are!” Axel screamed in the man’s face as he began to glow blue with energy.

“Axel stop!” Dawn shouted and Axel felt himself thrown backward slamming into the far wall. He turned to look at Dawn. “I’m sorry,” she said, but the look he gave her made her realize he thought she had betrayed him.

Axel turned and stormed out of the room without another word. Rolf rounded the table and hurried after him. Dawn began to chase after him as well, but Tom grabbed her arm. “Let him cool down a bit,” Tom said.

Everyone turned to look at Mr. X, but he simply straightened his coat and left the room.

“What in the hell is going on?” Ian demanded.

Tom sat back down and pulled out a cigarette, placed it between his lips and lit it with a match before putting the flame out with a flick of his hand. “Tell me, Ian,” He said as he blew smoke from his lips. “Have you ever heard of the International?”

  Epilogue

The water lapped against the side of the Argentinian fishing boat as it sailed through the ocean. There was a large commotion on the deck and the boat’s captain wandered up from below to find out what was going on. The crew stood pointing and gawking at the water and when the captain peered over the side he saw a woman floating on her back in the ocean.

“Get her out!” the captain shouted in Spanish as his men rushed to fish the woman out of the water.

The woman was laid down on the deck of the boat and the captain knelt over her patting the sides of her cheeks. “Senorita?” he said. “Senorita.” He placed his ear close to her lips and heard breathing. He then listened to her heartbeat. It sounded strong.

A rag dipped in ammonia was brought to him and he waved it under her nose. She opened her eyes. The woman immediately pushed the captain back and leapt to her feet, assuming a fighting position. She glanced about the boat and realized that the crew stood back from her. No one made an effort to attack her. She took in her surroundings and relaxed when she recognized it as a fishing boat. She realized that she must be somewhere off the coast of South America.

“Does anyone speak English?” she asked.

The captain nodded as he pushed himself up to his feet. “Yes,” he said in a thick accent. “A little.”

  “Where are we?” she asked.

“The Atlantic, near Argentina,” he replied.

She nodded. “May I please have some water?” she asked.

The captain nodded and then turned to one of the crew and sent him to fetch a cup. The crew member soon returned with a cup of water and the woman drank it down.”

“What is your name?” the captain asked.

“Jane,” the woman replied. “Jane Matthews.”
