“How the…?”
Her lips thin into a grimace. “I’ve trained my entire life for a job like this. I take down men. Usually bad guys. Too bad you aren’t as bad as all the rest. Because your fate will be the same.”
I realize she has my gun on me. She has all the weapons.
“Head downstairs,” she says.
I don’t move.
“Go. Downstairs. Or I’ll shoot you,” she says.
“I don’t believe you.”
She fires but misses on purpose.
I grunt and decide right now isn’t the best time to fight. I’m distracted, and I’m not sure I could hurt her even if I had a clear head. Moments ago, I was giving her the best orgasm of her life, although I’m sure that was a lie too.
When I get to the basement, I see the cage. The cage I could have used on her when I bought her, but didn’t. I was good to her, too good.
“Inside,” she says.
I walk inside. She slams the barred door shut and locks it. Only then does she drop the gun.
“What did Julian do to you?” I ask, needing this answer. Needing her to be honest. I think back through our history. She’s an excellent manipulator, and she’s right, I don’t think she ever spoke a lie.
She told the truth, I was just too stupid to read between the lines. To realize there was a reason she wasn’t like every other woman on that stage—because she wasn’t really being sold. She wasn’t ever in danger. She was just doing her job—undercover, working for one of the cruelest men I’ve ever met.
“He saved me,” she finally answers.
My eyes shoot up.
“Then why did he hurt you?” I ask. I know that was real. I saw the pain she felt. I nursed her back to health. Those were real bruises and scars. Those were real tears she cried.
“I’m not the one who needs saving, Zeke,” she says, backing away. She walks upstairs and closes the basement door, leaving me alone in the dark.
Siren’s right, she doesn’t need saving. And even if she does, I won’t be the one to rescue her. I need to save myself.
Unfortunately, Siren has had me under her spell since the moment she saved me. Apparently, she goes around saving men who she thinks her boss will want dirt on. She probably got paid for my secrets more than I paid to buy her.
Her words, though, will stay with me forever—her beautiful voice. I close my eyes, and I can hear them again.
“I always tell the truth, even when I lie.”
She warned me, and I fell into her trap. What other lies were hidden in her truths? What other sins?
It shouldn’t matter. I should escape. Run. Return to my old life. Warn my boss about Julian. Forget about Siren.
But I can’t stop thinking about her. My cock can’t stop wanting her. And my heart, the stupid muscle that it is, still beats for her. Stupid, stupid heart.
Siren saved me, only to use me for her own gain. I pull on the bars. They don’t budge.
Now I’m the one in need of saving.
