  About the Translators

BHIKKHU Ṇ̃̄AMOLI was born in England in 1905 and entered the Buddhist monastic order in Sri Lanka in 1949. During his eleven years in the Sangha he translated the Pali into lucid English some of the most difficult texts of the Theravada Buddhism, including the Visuddhimagga. He passed away in 1960 due to heart failure.

BHIKKHU BODHI is an American Buddhist monk, originally from New York City. He received monastic ordination in 1972 in Sri Lanka, where he lived for over twenty years. He is the author, translator, or editor of many significant publications including A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma, The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha (Majjhima Nikaya) , The Connected Discourses of the Buddha (Samyutta Nikaya), and In the Buddha’s Words. He is presently working on a complete translation of the Anguttara Nikaya. He lives and teaches at Chuang Yen Monastery in upstate New York. He also teaches at Bodhi Monastery in New Jersey.

The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies

THE BARRE CENTER FOR BUDDHIST STUDIES represents a new vision of the study and practice of Buddha’s teachings in America, dedicated to bringing together teachers, students, scholars, and practitioners who are committed to exploring Buddhist thought and practice as a living tradition that is faithful to its origins and lineage yet adaptable and alive in each new time and place. The Study Center, offers a variety of study and research opportunities, lectures, classes, seminars, work-shops, conferences, retreats, independent study, and, in the future, a scholars-in-residence program. Its vision calls for dialogue between different schools of Buddhism, and discussions with other religious and scientific traditions.

The Study Center has recently started Dhamma Dana Publications, which endeavors to bring a long-standing tradition to America by making high-quality books on Buddhist teachings available for free distribution. Anyone wishing to sponsor the publication and free distribution of a manuscript may contact the director of the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies.

The Study Center is located on ninety acres of wooded land in rural, central Massachusetts, one-half mile from the Insight Meditation Society. Founded in 1989, the complex has residential facilities for staff and course participants, a library, offices, and a dining hall. Visitors are welcome at all times.
