“Hey,” I protested.
“I’m kidding,” he said. “I love you. I love you more than I thought was ever possible. You brought a light into my life I didn’t know I was missing. You showed me what it was like to love and be loved. We were two very broken people who came together and somehow managed to help one another heal. You are my world. I cannot imagine waking up without you beside me, and I never want to. I want to make this official. I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?”
“Rand, you know I will.” I said the words a little too loudly. Cara stirred in my arms. I covered my mouth with my hand. “Yes,” I whispered.
He stood up and gently took Cara from my arms and laid her in her crib before coming back to me. He dropped to his knees once again and slid the ring on my finger. I looked down at the pretty diamond, and the first thing I thought was I wanted to show my mom. I couldn’t wait to tell her I was officially engaged. We were going to get to plan a wedding together, something I never ever dreamed I would ever have the opportunity to do.
I could feel the tears on my cheek and felt ridiculous, but the tears were ones of joy. Rand stood up and pulled me up to hold me close to him.
“It’s going to be okay,” he murmured, his hand smoothing my hair down. “Everything is going to be okay.”
“It is,” I said. “It is all perfect. I wish Alec were here.”
“He is,” he whispered. “In his own way, he is. This is all his doing. I think he planned it just like this. He wanted us to get together. Anyone could have given me that letter, but he asked you to do it.”
I pulled back a little to look up at him. “Do you think so?”
He grinned. “I know so. That’s how he worked. He was very creative and knew just what it took to get something he wanted. He wanted you to be happy. He wanted me to be happy. In his wisdom, he knew that required us meeting.”
I believed that was exactly what happened. I owed Alec everything. “When we have a son, I want to name him Alec,” I declared.
Rand smiled, kissing my forehead. “Why don’t we go work on that right now?” He grinned, his eyes flashing with mischief.
“Rand!” I hissed, playfully protesting but letting him drag me out of the nursery and down the hall to our bedroom.
I was looking forward to filling our house with a big, happy family and giving my mom plenty of grandchildren to adore.
