“Think Captain, think.” You growl, sitting down on the floor and looking about you for another way out. The hole in the ceiling is far too narrow and there does not appear to be any other openings. Your only way out appears to be the way you came in, but the thick slab of rock blocks your way. You spot something moving out of the corner of your eye. You turn to see a bright red snake slither out of a tiny aperture in the wall. More follow, snakes appearing all around you. You back away into the centre of the chamber as the floor quickly becomes a writhing carpet of snakes of all shapes and sizes. They close in on the centre of the room, slithering over and under the gold and jewels, closing in on you from all sides. You wave your torch at them, but this only delays their progress as they hiss angrily up at you. One lurid yellow snake rears up, coiled to strike and you jab the torch into its head. As you do so, you feel a sharp pain in your ankle as another sinks its fangs into you. You yowl in pain, swiping it off with the torch. As you do, another bites your calf. You cry out in agony before another bites and another and another. Your vision grows hazy as the venom flows through your veins. You fall to your knees, your body flinching as more snakes attack you. Your vision fades to black as you slump facedown into the nightmarish mass of slithering snakes.
THE END
“Step where I step.” You tell Tia. “We must be cautious if we are not to meet the same fate as our thin friend there.” Tia nods, a flicker of fear in her eyes. You step carefully, testing each stone underfoot before putting your full weight on it. You are halfway down the passageway when you feel the next stone begin to sink beneath your toes. You immediately spring back as several arrows shoot from small holes in the wall, pinging off the opposite wall. Tia gasps in surprise.
“Damn my foolishness for listening to you.” She mutters. “This is folly.”
“You won’t say that when we’re weighed down with treasure.” You grin. “So stop complaining. You are still alive.”
You make your way slowly along the rest of the passageway. At the end you stand on the threshold of a vast though darkened chamber. You can see a narrow beam of sunlight shining in through an aperture in the ceiling and hitting what seems to be a bronze shield next to you. You shine the torch onto the shield and realise it is the rear of a circular mirror and is set into a frame with a swivel mechanism. Tia spins it and the beam of light reflects off the silvery face, hitting a series of other mirrors positioned all over the chamber. You both squint, shielding your eyes from the glare for a moment. As your eyes adapt, you lower your hand and gaze about you in wonder. The chamber is hexagonally shaped with ornately carved stone walls. The whole of the floor is covered in chests bursting with gold and jewels. Golden plates and chalices and all manner of valuables glint and dazzle you in the reflected sunlight. There is so much, you wonder if you could even fit it all in your hold.
“You weren’t exaggerating.” You murmur, awestruck.
“We’re going to be the wealthiest people in the whole of the West Indies! Not bad for a disgraced officer and a common whore, eh?” Tia smiles, the gold and jewels reflected in her wide brown eyes.
“Not bad at all.” You grin, your gaze drawn to a central plinth, the cylindrical stone elaborately carved in hieroglyphics. Atop the plinth sits the biggest diamond you have ever heard about, let alone seen. The multifaceted gem is nearly the size of your fist and is crystal clear. You step towards it as if in a trance. The diamond alone would probably be worth the rest of the treasure combined. As you reach out for it, Tia suddenly grasps your wrist and snatches your hand back.
“Leave that one.” She tells you.
“Why?” You ask suspiciously, wondering if she intends to pocket the jewel herself.
“Something about it feels wrong.” She replies. “Why display something so grandly in a vault? The diamond feels like bait. Just leave it. There are riches enough elsewhere.” You don’t like it, but she has a point. You reluctantly step away from the plinth and quickly gather as much gold and jewels as you can carry, while Tia does the same. With one last longing look at the diamond, you turn to leave. You pause, noticing a square indentation in the centre of one of the other walls. It looks similar to the one in the side of the altar.
“Do you still have the key stone?” You ask Tia.
“Yes,” She replies, “Why?”
Use the key stone
It may be a trap. Retrace your steps
“It doesn’t matter.” You reply. “We have what we came for. Let’s get out of here before our Mayan friends realise their gold is about to be pilfered.” Tia nods and you make your way carefully back along the death trap of a passageway before climbing the stone steps back up to the vault opening beneath the altar. As you emerge into daylight atop the ziggurat, you find yourself gazing into the fearsome face of the war painted Mayan warrior you bargained with in your cell. Your eyes widen and you immediately reach for your cutlass. Before you can unsheathe it, his blade is at your throat, the razor sharp edge digging painfully into your flesh. He growls in his native tongue and several other Mayan warriors appear, grasping your arms and dragging you away. Tia screams in fear as she is pulled from the steps too, dragged away in the opposite direction. You never see her again, her fate a mystery.
You are locked back in the same cell, alone this time. Fear claws at your heart and a few hours later you are dragged back to the ziggurat and brought before the white robed priestess Itzel. Once again you are fastened to the altar, the assembled Mayans chanting all around the chamber. Itzel brandishes the ceremonial blade, the edge glinting in the sunlight shining through the opening in the ceiling of the cavern. This time as Itzel raises the knife, there is a malevolence in her eyes. She pauses, a hush falling over the watching Mayans before she plunges the blade into your chest. You scream out in agony before your cries become gurgles as your mouth fills with blood. Your vision fades to black as Itzel gazes grimly down at you, her immaculate white robes splattered with droplets of your blood.
THE END
Go back a few moments and rethink your actions
“Let’s just see what this does.” You murmur, moving towards the aperture. Tia joins you, handing you the key stone. You press it into the square hole and it clicks into place. There is a low rumble as a section of wall next to it slides open revealing a passageway dropping steeply away.
“Down again!” Tia gasps. “This cursed place seems to lead all the way to hell.”
“I don’t think so.” You reply, standing in the opening. You glance over your shoulder and smile. “I can smell sea air. This passageway leads to the ocean!”
A few minutes later, you emerge from the passageway and into a rocky sea cave, daylight shining in through the mouth. The sea laps at the jagged rocks at your feet and away to one side you can see the familiar shape of the Nemesis.
“Now there’s a sight for sore eyes.” You smile.
By noon, your crew (Under strict instructions not to touch the diamond) have emptied the contents of the vault. The Nemesis’s hold is full with the haul of a lifetime and as the last of the treasure is carried below, the crew are in high spirits.
“Can you imagine the heathens faces when they next open their vault?” Anne chuckles next to you as the crew weigh anchor.
“It’ll be a picture to be sure,” You grin, “But not one I care to witness. Mr Sykes! Set a course for Nassau. We have a fortune to squander!”
“Aye Captain!” He answers, before bellowing at the crew. You enjoy a quiet moment of contemplation, a gentle breeze in your face and the familiar salty smell of the sea in your nostrils. You will have enough money to enjoy living out the rest of your days in comfort. Perhaps it is time to retire from a life of piracy and reap the rewards. As the men sing an impromptu chorus of an old shanty, you smile. Not a chance. Once a pirate, always a pirate.
THE END
“So tell me Captain, do you like stories?” Tia finally asks.
“I have little time for them.” You reply, straightening your jacket.
/>
“You might find it’s in your interests to listen to this one.” She tells you. “More than a hundred years ago when the conquistadors were wiping out the savages in South America, a Mayan vessel laden with riches set sail towards the Caribbean. A Spanish ship was sent in pursuit and followed them into a storm. They lost sight of the Mayan ship and it was presumed that she had foundered.”
“I’ve heard this one before.” You interrupt. “The tale goes that the Mayan ship survived and continued on to an island in the Caribbean where the treasure was safely hidden within the depths of a secret Mayan temple. It’s an old sailor’s tale, Tia, nothing but a myth.”
“The Spanish found a map.” Tia replies. “There’s nothing mythical about that.”
“Aye, I’ve heard that too.” You reply. “A forgery no doubt. Besides, what good is a map if you don’t know where the island is?”
“Who says I don’t know where the island is?” Tia smiles. You lean forward, your interest piqued.
“Go on.”
“I know where the island is, but that is only part of the puzzle. As you say, the Spanish have a map and we also need a Mayan key stone to access the vault inside the temple. While the locations of both the map and key stone are known, retrieving them will not be easy.”
“What do you suggest?” You ask, wary of tall tales, but excited at the prospect of a massive haul of plunder.
“A partnership Captain.” Tia purrs. “A fifty-fifty split of the loot.”
“Seems generous in your favour considering my crew and I will be doing all the work.” You grumble.
“The information I have acquired has taken me a long, long time to procure.” Tia replies. “So I think an even split is more than reasonable. However, if you cannot agree to these terms then perhaps I should speak to Jack Rackham, Charles Vane or Blackbeard instead?” A thinly veiled threat and you can tell by her steady gaze and clenched jaw that she is not bluffing.
