I searched her eyes and knew she was right. “Ok. I’ll take care of it.”
After a lot of thought and consideration we’d moved into the farmhouse and had sold Mina’s house. With Zeke and Victoria dead, I got an inheritance I wasn’t expecting and we used the money to fix up Scott’s house. The money had been my father’s so I didn’t feel like it was bad karma on my part to accept it.
I’d had a successful winter with the plow service and had begun picking up some new clients. Now we were busy preparing for a summer of landscape work. My life had become so peaceful not having a pack to worry about.
We never saw or heard from Dixie again and we weren’t worried about it. Some of the pack had come crawling back and a few I welcomed, but let them know I wasn’t a leader. A few were ok with it and others left. Some were just too accustomed to pack life and couldn’t function without it.
Some of the guys stayed and moved together into a house nearby together. A couple came to work for me and another went to work at the local mechanic’s shop. The same guy also caught Debi’s eye.
I stood in the driveway and stared at the spot where I thought I’d lost Mina forever. The sound of her voice broke me from my memories as I walked to the house. She met me at the door and flung her arms around me.
“You’re in a good mood. What’s going on?”
“So, you’re sure you don’t want to be pack leader?”
Where was this coming from? “I told you, my pack leading days are behind me.” Pursing her lips I was starting to become suspicious. “Did one of the guys come and talk to you? I’ll kill ‘em.”
Giggling, she denied it. “No. It’s nothing.” Walking away from me, I knew it wasn’t nothing.
I clasped my hands around her waist and pulled her back against me. “What is it, Mina? You can tell me.”
She took my hand in hers and placed it low on her belly. “It’s just that soon we’re going to have a pack of our own.” She remained still and waited for my reaction.
Her powers had never come back, shifter or magic, and she’d come to accept it. Me, I couldn’t care less. She’d also remembered Jude touching her the night he died and her being slammed back against the wall. That had been the moment he returned her magic to her. Now her words had me scrambling for their meaning. Turning her in my arms I searched her eyes.
“Wait, you’re...?”
Pressing her lips together in a straight line, she raised her brows and nodded. “I’m pregnant.” I was speechless. “Rollo, say something. Are you mad?”
“Mad?”
“I just, I know we said we would wait, but apparently pulling out isn’t one hundred percent effective.”
We both laughed knowing we’d agreed to wait, but had also not taken proper precautions. “I’m not mad. Maybe a little shocked, but not mad.” Grabbing her arm, I pulled her close. “How far along?”
“Only six or eight weeks. It’s early. I have an appointment next week.”
Cupping her face, I tilted her mouth up to mine and kissed her. “You’re feeling ok?”
Nodding, she confirmed, “Yes.”
That night I watched her sleep, my hand resting on her belly. So many people had tried taking us down and while we never got all the answers, Mina got her revenge, I got my revenge. There was nothing sweeter than knowing we’d come out the victors and the guilty had paid. Thank God for that letter. I didn’t want to think about where I’d be without it.
Now a child. I wondered if the gene would lie dormant or not. Jillian had told us a few months back that Mina still carried both genes so odds were high that any child of hers, ours, would inherit it. Then Mina had asked what I hadn’t thought of.
“If Jude was able to keep my power inside him, could I do the same if my child had the Thomas magic?”
Jillian thought about it for a moment and then said, “Yes, I would have to say probably so.”
“How soon would I know?”
Jillian smiled, “Usually during pregnancy. Maybe as soon as the first trimester. It’s different for every wizard. I felt it sooner with Jude than I did his sisters. You just never know.”
At that moment Mina took in a deep breath and when I looked to her face, her eyes were that bright white blue for a split second before they went back to their beautiful blue.
“Mina? Are you ok?”
She smiled and put my hand back on her belly and covered it with her own. “He has magic!”
“He?”
“Yes, he told me. And he’s shifter, too.”
Tears filled my eyes. A son. She was giving me a son who’d have the magic powers from both of us. Life couldn’t get any better.
