The front screen door creaked open, drawing their gazes in that direction.

His momma stepped outside to join them on the porch. “I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I might as well come out here and relieve Addy. I’m sure she’s anxious to get back to Vera’s since she came right over as soon as she heard about you.” She looked to Addy. “Thank you for keeping Jake company.”

“I was happy to do it,” Addy replied as she rose from her perch on the steps. Turning to Jake, she said determinedly, “I’m not giving up on our friendship. It means far too much to me.” That said, she descended the steps and headed for her car.

Jake watched her go, thinking he should warn her that she’d only be wasting her time. But the breath to speak those words refused to depart his lungs. He wanted to blame it on his weakened state, but he knew that would be a lie. The emotional response he’d had to seeing Addy again proved that while his head had, his heart hadn’t completely set her aside.
