“You’ve been awfully nice to Izzy,” I said.
“Just my job,” said Magda.
“You’re modest, Magda. Izzy told me you were extra nice to him. He thinks you’re the prettiest nurse in the hospital.”
“He hasn’t seen them all.”
“You don’t know Izzy. He gets around.”
She smiled at that one and didn’t pull her hand away. When she blushed her face lit with color, like a farm girl just after heaving the hay. I began to ask myself questions about her. And all the time I squeezed her hand and made sly verbal passes at her. After a while she began to return the pressure.
“I shouldn’t be here so long,” she said. “You must have your rest, if you ever want to get out of here.”
“Maybe I’d rather stay.”
“Don’t say that. The doctor doesn’t want any complications.”
“To hell with the doctor,” I said. “Don’t move away, or I’ll go into a coma.”
She didn’t move. She couldn’t. I held her with my left hand, but I was always a switch hitter back in school. And pretty soon she stopped blushing and laughed at my jokes.
When that happened, I began to feel normal again.
