“No. I didn’t even know I was pregnant.” Kara said watching the monitor.
“From what I see, and the measurements of the baby now, you are about three months along.” The tech smile at her. “Congratulations.”
“So, the baby is healthy?” Cameron asked, she felt him squeeze her hand.
“Yes. The baby is right on track and doing great.” The tech pushed a few buttons, then handed them some pictures and left the room.
“We’re going to have a baby.” Kara whispered looking up at Cameron.
“Yes we are, my love, yes we are.” Cameron rubbed his nose against hers, and she felt tears slide down her face. It took her a minute to figure out they were his.
“You okay, sheriff?” She asked him softly.
“It’s been a long day, but I have you by my side, and I’m going to be a dad.” He smiled at her.
“And Susie is going to be a grandma.” Kara said reaching out her hand for Susie.
“I am so happy for the two of you. This baby will have the best parents ever.” Susie said through her tears.
Epilogue
Two weeks later, Cameron watched Kara sit on the porch swing with Callie while the other girls sat close by. To celebrate everything being over and her being alive, Cameron was cooking out at their house. Nobody but Susie knew about the baby. Kara was going to make the announcement today. Cameron took the food off the grill and made Kara a plate, then told the others to eat. Callie had the twins on a blanket in the yard with plates of cut up food for them to eat. Jacob had set up a playpen on the porch for Carter who was asleep. Cameron took his plate and sat beside Kara on the swing.
“You feeling okay?” He whispered in her ear.
“All good.” Kara smiled at him. He wondered if his heart would ever not skip a beat when she smiled at him, but he doubted it.
“We have an announcement.” Cameron said after everyone finished eating. When everyone looked up, he looked at Kara.
“We’re having a baby.” She squealed. The girls had a worried look.
“Do you know how far along you are?” Callie asked. Kara had said the girls would be thrilled. Their reaction dimmed Kara’s excitement. Cameron put his arm around her for support.
“She is about three and a half months along. We found out after the wreck.” Cameron said pulling her close.
“The baby…” Chasity said softly.
“Is perfectly healthy and has a strong heart beat.” He finished for her. Finally, the girls squealed and ran up to her. He felt Kara relax in his arms. He left her to them and walked down the steps to the guys.
“That’s great news. Congratulations.” Chase said as he squeezed Cameron’s shoulder.
“Thanks. It was a surprise, but we are happy about it.” Cameron told him.
“Glad to hear it’s doing good after the wreck. Kara looks happy.” Luke said watching the girls.
“She is. She was terrified when we found out, but after the ultrasound, she was over the moon.” Cameron smiled thinking of the look on her face.
As the excitement calmed down, Kara hobbled back over to the swing. Cameron knew she hated the cast, but she was doing pretty good with it. Reaching in his pocket, he felt the little velvet box. She would never expect what he had planned. He walked up the steps and knelt down in front of her. Kara smiled down at him and his heart skipped a beat. He reached in his pocket and pulled out the ring, but kept it in his fist so she couldn’t see it.
“Kara, my love. The day we got married I said it was for your protection. I wouldn’t change that day for anything. I knew then I loved you, and that love has only grown since we have been together. You are my everything, but I did forget one thing that day.” He opened the box and showed her the beautiful one carat princess cut diamond ring he had ordered for her. “I know we are already married, so instead of a normal engagement ring, this ring is the symbol of my love to you forever. Every time you see it shine, know that I am sending all my love to you. Every time it catches your eye, know that I am thinking of you. Every time someone looks at it, know that they are seeing how proud I am to be your husband. I love you, Kara.” He took her left hand and slid the ring in place, then kissed it gently. When he looked up, he saw the tears rolling down her cheeks, and the happy sparkle in her eyes.
“Love you.” She whispered. Cameron stood up and pulled her up so that he could hold her and kiss her.
“Now look what you have done. There all crying.” Jacob grumbled pulling Chasity into his arms.
Cameron laughed. Then turned Kara so she could show her friends her ring. He rested his hands over where she carried their baby. This was his entire world. He had his wife and child in his arms and all their friends gathered around them. He leaned his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes. Right there, on their front porch, he thanked God for all of his many blessings.
