A Broom Too Far Page 12

When I finally got back to the house I had just enough time to sneak the fish into the fridge before there was a knock on the door. I walked over to open it. “Quin, could you come here for a minute? I think you have a delivery.” I smirked as I spoke.

“Urgh, it won’t be anything good. I don’t remember ordering anything. I hope it isn’t bad news, but it will be. Everything is bad news now. Maybe there is no more milk anywhere in the world and they are going house to house letting us all know. What’s the point?” He was defeated and miserable. He walked over and stopped when he was in line with my legs. I pulled the door open.

Quin looked up as six bodies flew towards him, they had leapt off the ground and tumbled around on top of him. He couldn’t catch his breath, trying to look at all the kittens one by one to check that they were all there. He screamed with delight and then promptly burst into tears.

“You...I don’t believe it...they’re all here...are they staying?!” he asked between sobs.

“Yep, they don’t have to go anywhere. I could hardly let such a huge chunk of our family go without a fight,” I replied. He was crying so hard now he couldn’t get words out, but the kittens all stood around him licking his fur. Jinx and Howl then started to excitedly tell Quin about all the things they learned at the academy. I doubted Quin could hear them over his own shrieking.

“So, Delphi,” I said, “are you guys able to resist talking out loud if I bring a human over?”

“Oh yeah! We are so mature now, very capable of self-control and—” She was interrupted by Chomps diving onto her back and forming a ball of wrestling, furry arms and legs. “We’ll be fine!” she shouted from the blur.

I made a mental note to finally allow Brent into the house full of cats. I could cook a meal and we could watch a movie, just normal couple stuff. I would also need to make sure Edith didn’t make any appearances in the bathroom mirror when Brent was here. She had returned to the house after the scrying incident and I was grateful to have her back.

I showered, dried my hair and curled it delicately, allowing it to bounce down onto my shoulders as each heated segment cooled. Brent would be arriving soon for our dinner date. I had my notepad out on the desk in my bedroom and added a few more ideas to a list. I wanted to take him back to the clearing in the trees that he had taken me to, make us some food and those amazing cookies and try again with our first proper kiss. People always say you only get one first kiss with a person, this would be our second attempt but this time I wouldn’t be running back home hopefully.

I thought of all the times that I had wished I could feel this happy. Recently it had felt like everything that could go wrong had gone wrong, all at the same time. I was accused of a murder, almost killed by a family of vengeful witches and wizards, nearly sacrificed by some underprepared cheerleaders for all the glory of becoming professional dancers and I had come close to jeopardizing my relationship with Brent because of fleeting feelings for Ryan.

I checked my reflection again to make sure eyeshadow hadn’t fallen onto my cheek and I had no lipstick on my teeth. Edith appeared behind me in the mirror and gave me a thumbs up. I was wearing a smart beige sweater with a chunky knit around the neck to keep me warm, and a black skirt. My boots kept most of my legs warm, so with a thick coat and a pair of mittens I was ready to go.

A knock on the door alerted me to his arrival. I walked to the front of the house, fastening my coat as I went. When I pulled the door towards me, I was greeted by a huge smile. Brent held his arm up to me; I wrapped my arm around his and closed the door. We walked together; arms entwined until we reached the restaurant.

At the table we talked, shared food, laughed about a film we had seen a trailer for, and made plans for all our future evenings together. A buzzing sound on the table caught my attention. I looked down to see ‘House’ on the screen, Quin was calling me. I could sense that he wasn’t in danger, he probably wanted to just talk and talk.

I didn’t answer my cell phone.
