Penrith Stone Circle
Is one of the largest in northwestern Europe and may have had as many as 70 stones, of which 27 remain upright, including Long Meg, a 12ft high monolith of red sandstone. There are a variety of colours including four non-local quartz stones which align with the solar solstice and equinox as well as lunar events. There are a number of local legends surrounding the stones including one that says if you count them correctly and put your ear to the red monolith you’ll hear Long Meg herself whisper to you.

Avebury Stone Circle
The largest in Britain and is part of a wide network of Neolithic sites, including a wide henge/ditch, barrows and West Kennet avenue, made up of about 100 paired stones.

The Capitals of the Kingdoms
Carlisle
As far north as the Romans successfully held, Hadrian’s wall ran from just north of the city all the way to the east coast. The Deverell home depicted here is a sprawling castle for the royal family of Mercia. Carlisle castle in reality is much more similar in style to a bunker, testifying to its position on the hostile England/Scotland border, but here far from the wars a more elaborate home was possible.

York
A city which seethes with the past, the walls still circle a city that inspires Winterfell of Game of Thrones. York’s history is dotted with rebels and it still defends the sons that history have much maligned, Guy Fawkes and Richard II of the House of York. Medieval times echo through the narrow passageways of the Snickleways and the Shambles. I couldn’t resist making it the capital of Anglia.

About the Author
Clara O’Connor grew up in the west of Ireland where inspiration was on her doorstep; her village was full of legend, a place of druids and banshees and black dogs at crossroads. Clara worked in publishing for many years before her travels set her in the footsteps of Arthurian myth, to Mayans, Maasai, Dervishes and the gods of the Ancients. The world she never expected to explore was the one found in the pages of her debut novel, Secrets of the Starcrossed, which is the first book in the The Once and Future Queen trilogy.

Clara now works in LA in TV. At weekends, if not scribbling away on her next book, she can be found browsing the markets, hiking in the Hollywood Hills or curled up by the fireside with a red wine deep in an epic YA or fantasy novel.
