Comics Will Break Your Heart Page 26

David Warrick stopped an arm’s length from his son. Weldon waited, his hand laced through Mir’s. Weldon’s father glanced at Mir, his gaze tired.

“So I guess you’re staying in Sandford,” he said.

“If that’s okay,” said Weldon. His father nodded, stuffing his hands into his pockets.

“If it’s what you want, son,” he said. “If it’s right for you.”

“It is,” said Weldon. “Maybe even for my last year of high school, if that’s possible.”

  David Warrick smiled, almost wistfully.

“I always hoped you’d join me at Warrick Studios,” he said. “Maybe you will, someday.”

  “Maybe.”

“I hated Sandford,” David Warrick said with a sigh. “But if that’s where you want to live, I guess I’ll be visiting it over the next year. We’ll have to see what your aunt and uncle say, though.”

“You should come to our house for dinner,” Mir said. “My parents have a vegetable garden, so there are always a million vegetables to eat. I’m sure they’d love to have you over.”

David Warrick looked at Mir, and the lines on his face softened a little.

  “I’d like that,” he said.

“How did the trailer premiere go?” Mir asked.

  Weldon’s father brightened.

“Really well,” he said. “It’s trending worldwide on Twitter. It may have been worth it, after all.”

Weldon’s father turned and walked away from them, toward the same group of suited men and women that Weldon had seen him with earlier. As he approached the group, David Warrick spread his arms wide and the suits turned toward him, smiling their unnerving, perfect smiles.

  “You’re coming back,” Mir said.

  Weldon turned to face her.

“Yes,” he said. “Well, hopefully. Like my dad says, gotta see if it’s okay with my aunt and uncle.”

  Mir grinned.

“You are going to be so Canadian by this time next year, your dad won’t even recognize you.” And she stood on tiptoe, kissing him on the mouth. It was a little less sloppy than the first time, but still weird and still wonderful.

“YEAHHH COMIC-CON!” someone yelled from outside the booth.

  Mir rolled her eyes.

“Is that going to happen every time we kiss?”

  Weldon reached for her hand.

“C’mon,” he said. “Let’s go exploring.”

They walked together into the swirling mass of humanity.
