Forty books. Wow.
There are a lot of people to thank for getting me to this point, but first and foremost, I need to thank YOU. The reader. I wrote Broken World in 2012, and it went against every recommendation I’d seen from editors and agents. There was no market for zombie books, or at least that was what every online post about getting published claimed. The story was in my head, though, so I wrote it. Then I wrote the second book in early 2013, and the third that summer. At the time, I didn’t expect much from the series, and I had no clue how many more books I’d write even though I knew Mad World wasn’t the end of the journey for Vivian, Axl, Angus, and friends. When I released Broken World in July of 2014, my only hope was that one or two people other than family and friends would read it. By the end of the month, I’d had over 700 ebooks sold or borrowed through Kindle Unlimited. Over 1200 the following month. Now, more than six years later, well over 10,000 ebooks of Broken World have been sold or downloaded, and millions of pages have been read through Kindle Unlimited. People are still asking for more—especially more of Angus James.
So, back to my thank yous. A huge thank you goes out to every person who has ever taken a chance on me. To everyone who saw a new author and thought I’ll give it a shot, to every person who decided to try out a zombie book even though it wasn’t normally their thing, to every reader who loved it and told a friend, and to every person who took the time to leave a review or send me a message telling me how much they enjoyed the series. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I cannot say it enough.
To the people who read Broken World first and gave me feedback. Erin, Sarah, and Tammy, the three people became my writing cheerleaders when I lived in California. My husband, Jeremy, who doesn’t read that often but read and didn’t hate Broken World. Russ James, our awesome friend from California, who shared my love of dystopian fiction. Lisa Terry, who was my first great critique partner and who helped my writing grow so much. Fellow authors like Jenn Naumann, Lori Whitwam, and Jenn Foor, who I met because they read my series and loved it. To the members of NAC who helped spread the word: Diana Gardin, Ara Grigorian, Meredith Tate, Annika Sharma, Marie Meyer, Sophia Henry, Marnee Blake, Missy Belote, Jamie Howard, Jessica Ruddick, Amanda Seger, and Laura Steven. To friends from Oklahoma who became readers: Laura Johnsen, Ginny Foss, Carey Monroe, Lindsey Read, and Mary Jones. To family members who have devoured my books and encouraged me: Rebekah Caillouet, Peggy Mary, Sue Hale, Cyndi Caillouet, Amy Mary, and Clint Caillouet. To readers who became collaborators by helping read and critique my books: Jan Strohecker, Julie Dewey, Courtnee McGrew, Karen Atkinson, and Tina Young. And to my children who always tell their friends and teachers about me, who leave me alone when I need to edit, and who are so proud of what I do. Thanks!
I know there are so many more people to thank, and if I’ve missed you, I’m sorry. Know I am so grateful for the part you played in helping me build my career and the slip wasn’t at all intentional.
Now on to this book.
Thanks to Jan Strohecker, Courtnee Mcgrew, and Julie Dewey for those first few reads. To Lori Whitwam for your editing skills, to Amber Garcia for your PR help. Thanks to everyone who offered to make my 40th birthday special by sharing the release. Thank you, as always, to everyone involved with The Walking Dead who inspired me to write this series to begin with, to Dean Samed of Neostock for the great stock images as well as the video tutorials that have helped me improve my skills.
