“That Skay is dead?” she asked.
“That’s right. It’s a dead one.”
“Why is it there? Why do you allow such a ghastly mass of death to ride in your skies? Do you use it to scare children?”
“Uh… sometimes. But to us, it’s a trophy. We Earthlings killed it, you see. Centuries back.”
She looked at me with big, big eyes. “Really?”
“Scout’s honor.”
Helsa sighed and melted against me again. “I like being with a fearless male. I think I will like it here on Earth.”
I smiled, and I gently rested my chin on her head. We gazed up at the Moon, which had been misunderstood by humanity for countless generations.
The only thing I regretted about this campaign was that new disillusionment. The people of Earth would never again be able to look up into their night sky and feel the same way about its mystery and beauty.
