Our life is everything I ever wanted, but one I never dared to dream of.
Things couldn’t have worked out better.
For us.
For Vince, it was a different story. He escaped a jail term since his plans to have Lauren kidnapped was never able to be brought to justice. But his later involvement in a Ponzi scheme saw him get sent to prison for several years.
Lauren’s father visited us on the mountain once. A few weeks after the kidnapping. His eyes had swept over the cabin, over me, and then to my surprise he had shaken my hand.
“I’ve only ever wanted her to be happy,” he said. “And if this is it . . . well, that’s all that matters.”
It was the only time he came to the mountain. He died the following spring, missing our wedding six weeks later. Lauren came into her inheritance, but it didn’t change our lives. We had our own little paradise right there on Mirror Lake Mountain, and both of us knew we didn’t need anything from our past lives to complete it. Although, Lauren did insist on getting the Internet installed. And a television. Not that we spend a lot of time watching it, especially when our babies are in bed asleep. Because that’s when I get to worship my wife’s body well into the night.
With the arrival of two babies, I built a second wing onto our cabin, adding an extra four bedrooms, all of which I hope we fill with more children. My girl wants a big family.
And what my girl wants, my girl will get.
As far as I know, Lauren never looks back. She says she is more at home on the mountain than anywhere else, and her beautiful smile is never far from her face. She spends her days raising our babies and working on her flourishing essential oil business.
When she decided to try her hand at making her own oils and tinctures, I built her a garden, and when her business grew and she needed more plants, I built her a bigger garden.
Now she ships her potions all over the country.
Me. I work as a security consultant for high-profile clients. It’s interesting work and I get to meet some interesting people. But the best part is not having to be away from my family for very long. If I do have to spend some time away, my heart always overflows with gratitude when I return to the mountain and see my family waiting for me.
I’m just so damn content, it almost feels too good to be true.
But it’s not.
Because this is life.
And life can be truly amazing.
