Chapter 1
Tyler
My fingers curl so hard around the tall wine glass, I’m afraid I’m going to break it. I take a deep breath and carefully place it on the elegant glass coffee table in front of me. I get up. I need a bottle of water and a stronger drink than wine to get through this ordeal. I came here expecting the same bachelor party my cousin throws every year for his birthday, but I got a family affair instead. Kids are running around screaming and jumping, and there is not a hot single woman in sight. Their parents are oblivious to their antics, no doubt happy at being left alone. I mean, I knew my cousin got married—I was at the wedding—but I stupidly imagined that things would stay the same. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad my cousin has found his happiness, but he has changed. A lot. Even now, he’s holding his wife’s hand while talking to friends. He’s so into her, it’s kind of gross to watch. One of the kids at the party approaches me and hits me with a red toy sword over my left knee, and then he laughs and runs away. I wince in pain and Jake rushes to me.
Grinning, he runs his hand through his hair. “Are you okay, Tyler? I’m sorry, man. It's not party as usual, is it?" he asks apologetically and slaps me on the back.
"No," I say dryly and grab the wine glass from the table and take a big gulp. "It’s not, but you’re not the same either. Some changes are to be expected. I'm sure your wife wouldn't like the kind of parties you had before.” I roll my eyes. “But did you really have to invite my mother?”
He looks at me guiltily then scans the room until his eyes find his wife. He relaxes when he sees her and nods, distracted. "I wouldn't like it either, and I'm not sure I ever did. I'm happier now than I ever was. I’m sorry I invited your mother, but my mom and Lisa insisted, and I like to make them happy. You’re a big guy. You’ll survive. What happened with Janice?”
It’s funny how in tune and protective he is with his wife. I shrug my shoulders. “It wasn’t a long-term thing between us, so we split a month after your wedding last year. She went back to Los Angeles. She’s a good woman, but we weren’t right for each other.”
Jake nods and takes a sip of whiskey from the glass in his hand. “You’ll know it when you meet the right woman for you. Anyway, I'm sorry about all the kids screaming and running around. I hired an entertainer for them, but she's late."
I laugh. “Yes, it’s been interesting with them running around. I'm glad you’re so happy, man, don't worry about it. Go back to your wife. I’m going to get a glass of whiskey and a bottle of water," I say and head for the kitchen.
I wade through a sea of people, kids, and toys scattered all over the floor and make my way to the sleek and elegant kitchen. I scan the room for water bottles, and when I don’t see any I go to the fridge to search for them. I reach for the door, but instead of the cool handle my hand comes into contact with the warm, soft skin of somebody.
I raise my eyes from the hand to the person attached to it and discover it belongs to a pretty brunette with honey brown eyes and curly hair wearing a fluffy white bunny costume.
I grin and gesture towards her furry outfit. “Let me guess, you’re the entertainer,” I say dryly. “I love the pink bow tie,” I say.
She studies me for a moment with those mesmerizing brown eyes, smiles, and leans towards me like she wants to tell me a secret. Her sweet scent fills my nostrils, and a current runs thought me when a few loose strands of her gorgeous long brown hair touch my arm.
She looks at my left hand, no doubt noticing the lack of a wedding band. “Let me guess, you’re the bachelor,” she says and laughs, her eyes sparkling with humor. She moves her hand away from mine and pulls open the fridge, but I stop breathing and my heart starts beating faster. She grabs a bottle of water from the fridge, winks, then turns on her flats and walks away giggling. I exhale, stunned. Even her laugh is pretty, and her curvy body is obvious even in that baggy bunny costume. I like my women in heels and dresses, but even in that silly costume, she is the most stunningly gorgeous woman I have ever seen.
I grab my water from the fridge, close the door, and follow her outside. She’s already sitting at a table surrounded by all of the kids painting eggs and paper bunnies. I grab a chair from a nearby table and sit to watch her work her magic. She’s incredibly patient with the kids, explaining to them how to cut the paper properly or hold the brush. But the most incredible thing is that for the first time since I came here, the kids are quiet. I shake my head in disbelief. She must be some kind of miracle worker because even the kid with the red sword is happily decorating eggs and listening intently to her instructions.
Cord, a firefighter I met at Jake’s wedding, sits on the chair near me. He places his beer bottle on the table then we shake hands.
He gestures toward the other table where the mystery woman is happily painting eggs oblivious to us watching her. “She’s incredible, isn’t she? It’s the first time today that those kids have stayed still, isn’t it? She’s very pretty too.”
I feel a pang of jealousy at Cord’s words and decide I want to ask her out. Two hours later, I’m in the same spot, talking with Cord and watching her. The party is winding down, and some of the people are starting to leave and take their exhausted kids with them. She gives each and every one of them a kiss and a hug goodbye. She has a way with kids that is so natural and loving it’s a pleasure to watch.
“I have to go,” Cord says. “I have to go to work tomorrow and want to get a good night sleep.” He gets up and leaves, and by the time I turn around, my bunny has disappeared. I search for my cousin to ask him about her, and he tells me that she left. I run to the parking lot and catch her right as she’s getting into her Uber.
I clear my throat to catch her attention and not scare her. She turns around, surprised, and her Uber me starts its engine.
“Hi,” I say. “I didn’t mean to scare you. My name is Tyler, by the way,” I say shouting over the noise of the engine. “I like the clothes,” I say and gesture toward her outfit. She has changed into a pair of jeans and a soft white shirt and jacket.
She shakes my hand and smiles that pretty smile of hers. “Hi, Tyler, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” she says.
We make small talk, and I like her even more with every passing minute.
“Lady, are you going or staying?” the driver asks. “Time is money,” he says and shakes his head in disbelief.
“Tyler, it was nice talking to you, but I have to go home,” she says. “I didn’t get a chance to eat at the party, so I’m starving.”
I know this is my chance to make my move, so I take it. “What do you say we order some pizza and take this conversation to my place? I’m starving to
o. Jake is my cousin, so you’ll be safe with me. I’m a complete gentleman,” I say, and I wink at her. She laughs and agrees, so I pay her Uber and open the door so she can get inside my car.
Chapter 2
Marissa
I can’t believe I agreed to go home with a complete stranger. What is wrong with you, Marissa? I chastise myself. My hands are shaking slightly, but I’m determined to do this. I have to leave the past behind, and I might as well do it with this sexy man.
He’s gorgeous and makes me feel all sexy inside when he looks at me with those intense blue eyes of his. I haven’t dated since I broke up with my fiancée and came back from Australia. Today is an especially sensitive day, and I’m about to do a stupid thing. Or not. Depends how you look at it. My girlfriends would be happy for me, but I’m sure my family wouldn’t. Having a one-night stand is not my style, but I feel so alone and lost that I just want to forget about everything. My family doesn’t say anything, but I know they worry for me.
“What are you doing for Easter?” I ask just to make conversation.
His jaw tightens, and I get a feeling I’ve hit a nerve. “I’m going to visit my family on Sunday, unfortunately. I can’t get out of it or I’ll never hear the end of it. My mom would be very upset, and I don’t want to hurt her.”
“You don’t sound too thrilled at the prospect. Don’t you get along with your family?” I ask. “You don’t have to answer. I’m sorry for asking all these personal questions five minutes after we’ve met.”
He sighs and takes a deep breath. “It’s fine,” he says. “I love my family to pieces, but they keep bugging me about getting married and giving them grandchildren now that Jake has gotten married.”
“Don’t you want to have children?” I ask. I’m surprised by the deep conversation we’re having so soon after meeting.
He shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t know, I haven’t really thought about it,” he says. “I haven’t been around kids much to form an opinion about whether I would be a good father. You’re great with kids,” he adds. “Do you usually work with kids or is this gig your full-time job?” he asks.
I shake my head. “I own a daycare center; this bunny thing is something I occasionally do for extra cash.”
I didn’t want to be alone today.
I don’t tell him that, of course. He doesn’t need to find out about my sob story. “I opened the center about two months ago.”
“That is fantastic,” he says. “I’m glad you’re doing something you love.”
I nod and don’t press the conversation further; we both know what we’re doing here. There’s no need for meaningful conversation about our lives.
We travel in silence to his apartment, and my sour mood brightens when we get inside. He orders the food, and I sit on his plush gray couch and stare at the ceiling. I’m not entirely comfortable with the situation, and don’t know if I’m going to go through with it. He lives in a huge penthouse and it’s obvious he has money but I don’t care about that.
“Do you want some wine?” he asks from the kitchen.
“Sure. I like a dry red if you have it,” I say.
He chuckles. “I like a woman who knows her wine,” he says.
I giggle and feel more at ease with the situation. He comes into the living room and hands me a glass of wine. A slight current passes through my body when our fingers touch. His eyes crinkle when he smiles, and he looks at me with a burning intensity that makes me shake a little.
The doorbell rings and the pizza arrives. We eat our food in silence on the sofa, and I like it that way. I like that he doesn’t babble about himself, and I love the little satisfied noises he makes while chewing his food.
“It’s really good,” I say. “It reminds me of the pizza I ate while I was in Italy, three years ago.” I regret the words as soon as I say them. I met my ex on that trip, and I don’t really want to think about Mark.
He stops eating and stares at me. “Hey,” he says. “Are you all right? You seem a little sad.” He touches my curls with his hand and then gives me an awkward pat on the back. “Do you want to talk about it?” he says.
I shake my head and place the rest of my pizza back on my plate. If I start talking about it, I’ll cry again, and this was supposed to be my escape from reality, not a therapy session, so I lean into him and give him a kiss. His lips are soft and taste like pizza and wine. He kisses me back, and once he does the floodgates open and my mood changes. We can’t keep our hands off each other. He frantically kisses me, and I grab his shirt and kiss his neck. I bite my lower lip out of arousal while he takes my shirt off.
He looks at me, his own arousal clear in his eyes. “Are you sure you want to do this?” he asks.
I nod and grab the wine glass, taking a sip. “I want to do this, Tyler, but I’m just a little nervous. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to lead you on.”
He places his hand on my shoulder in a comforting manner. “You didn’t lead me on, Marissa. You don’t have to apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong. I understand if you don’t want to jump straight into bed with someone you just met. I want you very much, but we can just spend the night talking and eating pizza, if that’s what you want,” he finishes.
His words bring me comfort and sooth my nerves, and I’m ready to do what we started. I lean my head in and kiss him again. He kisses me all over my neck and then captures my lips as we frantically take our clothes off. Once we’re half naked, Tyler leads me to his bedroom, and I feel that this night is going to be unforgettable. He pushes me onto the bed until I’m lying flat on my back and then climbs on top of me. I expect him to kiss
me, but he just looks at me, emotion and lust clear in his eyes.
“You are so beautiful, Marissa,” he says. “The most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.” His eyes are hungry, and I stare at him, stunned. No man has ever looked at me with so much adoration and lust.
“You don’t have to stroke my ego. You already have me in your bed, Tyler…” I joke nervously. I grab a few stands of my hair and twist them between my fingers. My heart melts at his words, but they also make me a little self-conscious.
“Stark,” he adds, and I frown, not understanding. “My name is Tyler Stark.” He takes the rest of my clothes off, and he nuzzles his way up to playfully bite my earlobe then pays special attention to my breasts. His eyes seem to be transfixed on them, so I guess I don’t have to worry that he won’t like them.
I stare at him in bewilderment when he takes his clothes off. He’s built like a Greek god, all hard muscles and a six pack.
I close my eyes in ecstasy while he touches my pussy and rubs my clit. I come like a freight train in a few minutes, my body on fire with pleasure. I don’t think I’ve come this hard in my entire life. I open my eyes, dazed.
He moves on top of me and guides his cock inside my pussy, and my entire body vibrates in response. He fills me completely then starts moving inside of me. No man has ever felt as right as Tyler does in this moment; our bodies joined as one. He rides my body with passion, our fingers entwined. I have another toe-curling orgasm that leaves me shattered on the sheets. His moans become louder before turning into guttural grunts as he comes. We lie in his bed for a few hours, and I can’t help but think that this night is going to go down in my memory as unforgettable.
Then I do a bad thing. I leave without saying goodbye or leaving him my phone number. After all, this is a one-night stand. I'm sure he's happy that he won't have to kick me out or remember my name in the morning.
Chapter 3
Tyler
“Do you want to come to my house for lunch on Monday?” Aidan asks. He’s my new business partner, and we’ve become good friends since meeting six months ago. He’s a smart guy with great ideas, and he’ll make me a ton of money.
“Not really,” I say politely. The truth is, I’ve had enough of family parties this week, and after the disaster that happened at Jake’s house, I can’t stomach another family gathering like that. B
esides, I couldn’t concentrate all week because I kept thinking of Marissa. I still can’t believe she left without saying goodbye or leaving me her phone number. If she doesn’t call me in the next few days, I’m going to swallow my pride and ask Jake for her phone number.
“Why not?” he insists, ignoring my refusal and taking another bite of his sesame bagel. He raises his eyebrows and looks at me expectantly while chewing his food. “I know you meet with your family on Sunday, so come to lunch on Monday. You’re not dating anyone right now, and you’ve been in a weird mood this week. It’ll do you good to relax a little.”
I shrug my shoulders and tell him the truth because this is the kind of relationship we have. “I’m not in the mood, Aidan. So, no I don’t want to come to lunch on Monday,” I tell him, frustration clear in my voice.
He chuckles and slaps his left hand on his knee making his leg jerk and hit the table in front of him. “It’s a woman,” he says. “It must be. Couldn’t exactly pinpoint your mood this week, but only a woman would bring out this level of frustration. Spill, man. Come on,” he says chuckling.
This is the first time we’ve talked about women since I met Aidan. “I met this woman last week,” I say while pacing the room like a caged animal.
That piques Aidan’s interest. "Oh? I knew it! So, what’s the problem?"
I sit down and my foot smacks the table making the glasses rattle. “She’s incredible. I can’t stop thinking about her. But she left before I could ask her for her phone number. I don’t know man, I don’t know what’s happening with me. I can’t concentrate. She’s all I can think about. I feel like a stupid teenager.” I rub my temples and feel my shoulders going rigid. I expect Aidan to make fun of me, but he gives me a serious look instead.
