“Are you ready to go inside?” I asked
Roman breathed deeply as though needing one last breath of the magical night air. “I am. Let’s have our first real Christmas together. I feel like last year doesn’t count.”
“It most certainly does. Last Christmas brought me you.”
Roman smiled. “I suppose it did.”
I dressed quickly, took his hand, and led him inside.
Candace was waiting for us with Ruby snuggled in her arms. The baby was wide awake. The little night owl. She watched the twinkling lights of the tree with pure joy on her face. I reached out and tugged on one of her tiny feet. “Hello, my precious one.”
She smiled at the sound of my voice, and her eyes shimmered, their color turning to a swirl of red before quickly becoming brown once more.
“Did you see that?” Roman asked. “Her eyes changed.”
“I sure did. It’s the first clear sign of the dragon she holds inside.”
Candace squealed. “That’s wonderful. When will she be able to change?”
“She won’t make a full change until she’s at least three, but we’ll keep getting little glimpses like this of her dragon.”
“Does that mean her scales will be red?” Roman asked.
I smiled at my mate. “It does.”
“We can’t have caused that because we named her Ruby, can we?”
I laughed and shook my head. “My guess is that we instinctively knew her dragon and gave her the perfect name.”
Roman reached for our little girl, and Candace transferred her carefully.
“Merry Christmas, Candace,” I said. “You can go enjoy your evening.”
“Thank you. Merry Christmas to all of you.”
After she left, I put my arm around Roman, and we turned to look at the big tree which we’d once again decorated with the glass ornaments that had brought us together plus a few new ones made by the same artist. We’d added a second smaller tree, which we’d decorated all in red glass in honor of Ruby.
I’d loved Christmas ever since I could remember, but I’d never felt as much excitement as I did that night. Ruby let out a happy squeal, and Roman looked up at me with love in his eyes. I knew no treasure would ever compare to the two most important people in my life.
