“Jacques? What are you doing? Where are we going?” I looked around with alarm.
I was terrified. Had something gone wrong? What if there were complications? What if I needed surgery?
Jacques waded into the water and then set me down, submerging me up to my waist. The water was cool, despite the late afternoon sun, but I was too distressed to notice. I watched as he dug a depression in the mud under the water and then I let myself be drawn over to it. Jacques pushed down on my shoulders, making me squat over the depression. The water came up to my shoulders.
What does he expect me to do? I wondered, looking up at him with frightened eyes.
And then the contractions came. They were sudden and sharp. I groaned and grabbed Jacques’s hand, squeezing it as hard as I could. Jacques held my hand, unconcerned, as calm and professional as a doctor. There was another round of contractions and I felt the shifting again, but this time, the shifting didn’t stop. I moaned, and then I felt the baby slipping.
A third wave of contractions came, but this time, rather than being painful, they felt oddly satisfying, a deep rhythmic pulsing that was strangely sensual.
I could feel the baby passing through my birth canal, no larger than an orange, but large enough to give me concern. There was a sudden keen intensification of those same sensual feelings, a strange upsurge of excitement, and then an incredible bursting sensation.
The baby emerged smoothly from my body and sank into the water. The contractions ceased abruptly, leaving behind only a dull, pleasant throbbing. It had happened so fast that I was still in a state of shock. The whole thing couldn’t have taken more than five minutes.
I was afraid to look in the water. I didn’t want to see what had come out of me, but Jacques hunched down in that unconcerned way of his and placed his hand in the water beneath me, trilling softly. His gills were fluttering lightly.
Did I have a miscarriage? Or is this normal? Is it alive? What happened?
I knew I had to look. No matter what had happened, I knew I had to see it for myself. Steeling myself, I forced myself to look down. Jacques was running his fingers over something round and white, about the size of a softball.
An egg! Of course! Oh, thank God!
I was so relieved I started to cry. I reached down into the water and touched the egg, feeling the soft, leathery surface.
Our baby. Oh my God! My child is inside of that!
And then the contractions started again.
“Oh no,” I said, grabbing Jacques by the arm.
Jacques looked at me and nodded.
I groaned and felt the same slipping sensation, the same peristalsis, and a second egg slid out of me and dropped into the water to join the first in the muddy nest.
Dear God! How many are there?! Am I going to give birth to a whole litter?!
One Fish-Baby was bad enough. Two was enough to give me heart palpitations.
I waited with trepidation for the contractions to return, but after ten or fifteen minutes of squatting in the water, Jacques seemed satisfied that no more eggs would be dropping and carefully covered the nest with mud. He mad a thick layer and gently patted it down.
“That’s it? That’s all we have to do?” It seemed incredible.
Jacques nodded, squeezing my hand reassuringly. Then he picked me back up and carried me back onto the porch. He set me down on the bench and sat down beside me. He held me in his arms and we sat quietly together, gazing at the lagoon, wondering what the future would bring.
It wasn’t exactly the life that I’d wanted, but it was a life I could live with. And I already knew it was going to be one hell of an adventure.
