Samson Page 22

by Marie James

I’m unbuckling the tie on my coat when he takes another step back. My eyes nearly bulge out of my head when he hits one knee.

  “No,” I whisper. “Are you?”

  “If you let me?”

My hands cup over my mouth before I blurt stupid things before he’s ready to hear them.

“I love you more than I ever thought possible,” he begins. “Every day I love you more than the one before. I can’t tell you what my obsession with you is going to look like in fifty years. From the time I discovered that girls were to be admired and revered rather than just serving as bratty little girls getting on my nerves, you’ve been locked into my fantasies. I knew when I was ten that you were the only girl I could ever see myself marrying, and that holds true to this very day.”

“If you call me mommy to ease the tension right now, I’ll kick you.”

His eyes close for too long of a moment, and I’m terrified I’ve ruined the whole thing.

  “Samson? What are you doing?”

“Shh,” he urges. “I have to reformulate my proposal.”

His eyes snap open, and a wide smile spreads across his face.

“I’m no longer a child, no longer a little boy clinging to the girl who chases his monsters away. I kneel in front of you Camryn Davison as a grown man who plans to spend the rest of my life worshipping you. Will you keep me from getting arrested for stalking and marry me?”

Tears don’t even bother pooling on my lashes. They roll heavily and quickly down my cheeks.

  “Are you sure?”

“I’ve never been more positive about anything in my life.”

A sob escapes my throat when he snaps open the jewelry box, and the ring I’ve been familiar with all my life glistens in the patio lights.

“Your dad gave us his blessing.”

Pinching my mom’s engagement ring between his fingers, he pulls it free from the box.

“Be my wife?” he asks again.

I don’t have the ability to wait for him to put the ring on my finger. I sling myself against his chest and press my mouth to his.

“I’m so glad you asked.” My words come out broken, combating the sobs still coming from my mouth. “I was going to ask you to elope tomorrow.”

He manages to get the ring on my trembling finger.

  “I got a feeling.”

“Did I ask you in my sleep?”

I hate that I mumble things when I’m super tired.

“You didn’t ask, you just said ‘I do’ over and over, but I want you to know I’ve had that ring for months. I was just waiting for the perfect time.”

“I love you,” I profess, pressing my lips to his again.

“You make me the happiest man on the face of the earth, Cam.”

  “You haven’t seen happy yet.”

He chuckles when I squeeze his ass, but when I pull my arms back and go for the zipper on his tux pants, he pulls them free.

“Now isn’t the time for that.”

“Now is the perfect time for that,” I argue, reaching for him again.

“Did you miss the cluster of people on the back patio?”

My face heats despite the frigid air circulating around us.

“Keep going,” Cannon yells from twenty feet behind us. “I was enjoying the show.”

  “Son,” Morrison warns.

“Has anyone seen Jasmine?” Dominic asks.

“I think I saw her in the hallway earlier with Tug,” someone says.

“Oh shit,” I say, pushing past Samson and rushing toward the clubhouse.

“What’s going on?” Samson has my hand and keeps pace as I push past everyone on the patio, following Dominic through the back door.

“The eagle is landing,” I yell as soon as I’m inside.

“What?” Samson asks again, but I don’t have the luxury of time right now.

“The eagle is landing!” I yell again, this time with both hands cupped over my mouth, and praying I can be heard down the hallway.

“What the hell is going on?” Samson spins me around.

“You distracted me when you took me outside. I was on a mission,” I try to explain all the while tilting my head to see down the hall.

“What have you done?” Samson’s voice is filled with humor.

“I’m failing at my job as a friend.”

“What the hell?” Dominic screams from somewhere in the clubhouse.

There’s no humor in his voice.
