She hadn’t been able to put the paper down.
How had she found it? Oh, that’s right. She’d been rifling through her desk drawer and a newspaper article she thought she had gotten rid of found its way into her grasp.
She pulled it out, half distracted with her defenses down, and stared at the smudged writing on the faded paper.
Man dies in car crash.
She didn’t read the rest of the article. She didn’t need to. The accident wasn’t something she had to hear about from someone else.
Colin had been there. She’d seen it. She was quoted in some of the articles.
The shock of finding the article numbed her mind. She’d stumbled out of the office and somehow she’d made it back to her house to collapse in the safety of her closet. As soon as she had enough energy she would reach forward and she would grab the finely crafted wooden box she had shoved under her shoe rack. It wasn’t any bigger than a shoebox itself.
After a moment Colin reached forward, pulling the cedar box into her lap. She never locked it. If she locked it, she’d be saying a final goodbye and she couldn’t do that. She wasn’t ready.
Colin would never be ready for goodbye.
She lifted the lid, closing her eyes and breathing in the essence of his cologne and a cut of his hair she’d saved. The smells she swore she’d never forget. Each time she was forced to open the box was new and heartbreakingly painful.
A stack of pictures greeted her when she finally opened her eyes.
Did she have the strength to look through them and rediscover the memories that she worked so hard to bury?
Colin had forgotten any kind of happiness. She’d forgotten what it meant to roll over and see the one she loved sleeping beside her. She forgot what it was like to care about someone else’s opinion or to rely on someone else to help her decide what she was going to do for the evening.
She reached in the box to pull out the stack of papers, unable to resist the pull. Before she could withdraw the pictures to study for torturous hours on end, her phone buzzed in her pocket, half breaking the spell that held her in check.
Wiping away the tears she hadn’t known she’d been crying, she swiped the screen. A text from Carlisle brought her back to the present and she pushed the box away. She had to extract herself from the past and shove herself back into the present.
Her present of loneliness and longing that was still filled with unexpected happiness as she matched others for a happy-ever-after.
The honeymoon couple was successful.
Carlisle didn’t know that Colin had plans for him next. It was time to put those plans into motion.
Everyone deserved happiness. Everyone deserved love.
