Curse of a Dragon's Claim Page 2

“Perhaps.” Arianna frowned, her gaze locking on the older woman’s reflection in the mirror. “I feel particularly nervous about this garden party. For some reason I have this uneasiness…no, not really uneasy, I’m not sure what it is, but I’m worried.” Arianna placed her hand over her stomach. It pained her. “I feel something life changing is about to occur.”

“Hush now, Arianna.” Alba patted her arm. “Such talk makes people very nervous, including me. Change can be good.”

“I can’t help it, I feel something momentous will soon happen. I’m not sure if it’s good or bad. I need to be able to speak of things to someone, and the only one I can reveal myself to is you.” Arianna pouted.

“Put these thoughts from your mind and relax. You’re merely nervous about meeting the eligible gentlemen your father invited. I overheard your father say there will be several eligible, well-respected businessmen there. A widower and one who has never been wed are said to be present.”

“Father doesn’t know what an excellent catch is.” Arianna rolled her eyes. “He’s only looking at their wealth.”

“Of course he is, Arianna. It would do you well to understand the way of it. You’d never wed a pauper. You are meant for greater things. Hold still, your hair’s almost done,” Alba instructed.

Arianna handed Alba another pin. The words swirled in her head, a familiar mantra she’d long since gotten tired of.

“There, you’re absolutely exquisite. I want you to look wonderful as soon as you step off the carriage. We’ll refresh you once you’re there. But first impressions, you know.”

“I can’t believe you think wealth’s the only important thing. Not you, Alba. Love’s important. Don’t you think? Isn’t love with physical attraction most important? I know most girls don’t think of this. But I do.”

“I know you think differently in many things, but don’t speak of this to any other. Just remember, love doesn’t pay your bills or buy your lovely silks. Love doesn’t do much, and it may not last.” She motioned for Arianna to stand, then helped her into her dress.

“Papa and Mama loved each other, theirs lasted.”

“Yes, a rarity in itself. If you can tolerate him and he’s wealthy, you’ve the makings of a good husband. Love may come.” Alba stood back, inspected Arianna, and smiled. “You look gorgeous. Let’s get downstairs. The carriage is already parked out front.”

“There will be other females there to charm the gentlemen. They’re much better at being amusing. Sarah’s always so charming and delightful.”

“Yes, but these men are eligible suitors. You’re in need of a husband.”

“I don’t need a husband, at least not yet.”

“Hush, you speak silliness,” Alba scolded as only a beloved servant could do. “You’re a young woman, you need a husband.”

“The other girls need husbands too.”

“Don’t be foolish, you know as well as I, Rafaela’s engaged, Jenna’s being courted by a very appropriate suitor, and Sarah…well, she’s Sarah. You most certainly need a husband. You’re nineteen years old, and getting older every day.”

“You make me sound ancient.” Arianna giggled.

“Someone must take care of you. It won’t be your father forever, he grows older too.”

“Truly, I can take care of myself.”

Clayne relaxed against the ornate couch, a drink in his hand. He appraised the home with a quick eye, the luxury of the human’s dwelling spartan compared to the spacious townhouse he’d recently purchased in the heart of Florence. The invitation to the Allegretti home was most advantageous. It allowed him to continue his search without breaking his cover of a rich merchant who recently relocated from Rome to enjoy the art and culture of Florence, the jewel of the Renaissance.

It amused him to interact with these uncomplicated people. Signor Antonio Mergliano had been insistent that Clayne accept the invitation to the garden party, assuring him an entertaining visit. For some reason, Clayne was compelled to accept, he liked the old man.

Clayne shifted. While fortuitous, the invite was a hindrance. He should be searching for a godforsaken female with the mark of the dragon. No doubt the Forsaken bitch was an ugly, cold-hearted, half-breed bloodsucker. His blood boiled at the very notion of a vampire’s offspring.

There’s no fucking way she’ll be my mate. Mother’s prediction is wrong.

Clayne stood up, stretching his legs. Taking a sip of his drink, it cooled his inner heat. He burned with annoyance at having to do the Goddess Amuliana Synvera’s bidding.

His hatred for anything remotely related to vampires ate at him. They were only good for killing, as far as he was concerned. As loyal as he was to his king, this quest made his temper burn. He’d much rather be back in Ejdeha Dragoni having his teeth pulled than searching for this abomination in human form.

Mother’s wrong. How could the fates be so cruel to me?

He sighed into his drink. It had been years since he’d spent so much time among mortals. Only his trips for his king drew him from his seclusion, and the grief still stung at the loss of his beloved sister.

Perhaps he’d find a simple-minded human female to dally with, relieve his frustrations. Dragon females could be so complicated and greedy of his time. Often, human girls pretended to be virtuous, yet he knew better, seeing through their facade immediately. Allegretti’s daughter was one such female, she smelled of many men. Perhaps she’d be willing and eager to sneak off to a secluded place where he could get lost for a bit between her thighs. The thought brought a smile to his face.

“Signor MacDagon, how are you enjoying your stay? My apologies for the delays, we’ve guests arriving shortly before all the festivities begin.” Allegretti chuckled, rolls of fat jiggled as he did.

“Signor Allegretti, you’re a very gracious host. I look forward to whatever you’ve planned.”

The man’s face was rosy from the intense heat of the day. He wiped sweat off his brow with a pale, lacy handkerchief. “Dear Lord, it’s hot. I’ve opened all doors to the patios. Would you like to move closer to the doors?”

“Thank you, I’ll move about to get some cooler air. But really, I’m fine.”

“Please, call me Ezio. I wish us to be on friendly terms. It’s truly a pleasure to have you in my humble home.”

“I’m most grateful for your hospitality. Please call me Clayne.” He lifted his glass and took a sip. “This is a delicious drink.”

“Si, it’s one of my favorites. Black tea from China with a hint of mint added for flavor.” Ezio clasped his hands together. “Forgive me, Signor Clayne, there’s much to be done. When the other guests arrive we’ll have lunch.” Ezio rushed away to see to the preparations.

Clayne gulped down the tea, craving a shot of whiskey. He stepped out onto the nearest patio. A cooler breeze hit his face. It felt nice, a refreshing change. Inhaling, he closed his eyes. The air was laden with floral scents, and something else. His eyes flew open, searching the area for an indication of where ‘her’ scent came from.

In the distance, eight carriages were making their way up the Allegretti’s long, winding drive. Clayne watched the carriages roll through the manicured grounds. He could hear the musicians setting up. The smell of rich food filtered through the air, masking the flowers.

Heat rushed to consume him. He could feel the excitement building, his inner beast stirring, awakening. Eagerness filled him. Was it the hunt or something more affecting him so? Pacing the patio he watched, waited, inhaling cooler air.

He stared at the wilting flowers around him. “What the hell is wrong with me? Get it together, Clayne, or you’re going to have humans dropping like flies around you from the heat you’re putting off.”

As he paced, the music began to play, and pleasant notes floated out into the garden, soothing him. Pushing his hands through his hair, it fell back down almost into his eyes. Again, inhaling deeply, he took in the cooler air, allowing it to soothe hi
s lungs and his nerves.

The unusual feelings stunned him. It had been decades since he’d felt so primed. Rejoicing at the stimulation, his cock twitched in expectancy. For what, he wasn’t sure. But this was certainly a sexual heat he was feeling. Adjusting himself in his breeches, his cock was sensitive to touch.

His inner flames spiked as he watched the carriages come to a stop in front of the grand entrance. Giddiness overcame him, a feeling he had little time for or inclination to experience, but one he couldn’t shake. Instincts roared to life—the hunt was on and he would prove victorious. Resolute, he pushed aside the mission of his king and the goddess for the moment. Tomorrow, he’d find the parasite, today, he had much fairer game to stalk.

“Papa, wake up, we’ve arrived.” Arianna tapped her father’s knee.

“Yes, dear, I’m awake. I just needed to rest for a bit.”

Arianna straightened, her fingers plucking at the lace of her shawl. Her gaze swept the impressive visage of the Palazzina, noting the approaching coachman as the carriage shuddered to a halt. When Arianna stepped out she felt a peculiar sensation pass through her. Perspiration dripped between her breasts, down her back.

“Arianna, are you all right?” Alba asked with concern. “You look pale.”

“I just got really warm. I’m good now.” After they exited the carriage, they walked up the stone steps leading to the entrance. Arianna could hear others stepping out of their carriages. Giggling conversations filled with excitement erupted around her.

“Arianna, I’m so excited you’re here. We’re going to have a grand time.” Sarah greeted her at the door, hugging her. Standing back, she looked Arianna over from head to toe. “I’m jealous. You look simply beautiful, even after a long journey in your travel clothes.”

“Alba insisted I make a good first impression.”

“You certainly impress me.” Sarah’s blonde curls floated all around her head, framing her face. “Good advice she’s given you. There are some very handsome men here today. I’ve taken special effort to look extra stunning myself. One in particular has the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. You should see how he fills out his breeches,” Sarah whispered.

Arianna frowned. “Sarah, you shouldn’t be noticing those things. You do look radiant though. I’m sure the men will find you lovely, they always do.” She kissed Sarah’s cheeks. “But stop looking at their breeches.”

“I’m not looking at their breeches. I’m looking at the bulge under them.” Sarah’s eyes twinkled.

  “Shame on you.”

“Arianna, I have to tell you about my recent adventures. Come, I’ll show you to your rooms. You can freshen up and change into your party clothes.” Sarah took her arm and escorted her toward the stairs, motioning for Alba to follow. “The luncheon will be served soon. Cook has made the most delicious menu. I’ll tell you what adventures I’ve had later, when we have a bit more privacy.” Sarah winked.

The rustle of their skirts as they hurried through the corridors only added to the festive air. Chamber music played amid the laughter and revelry.

“Will it not be nice to dance again?” Arianna followed Sarah into her room. “Is that… Why, it’s a mandolin. Sarah, you remembered!”

As soon as Alba entered the room, she began to go through Arianna’s things, laying a fresh gown on the bed. “Hurry, Arianna, no time to dally about. They’ll not hold lunch for us.”

“Oh, Alba, don’t worry so much.” Arianna hugged her before lifting the elaborate bonnet from her hair then pulling her riding gloves off.

Impatiently, Arianna let the older woman fuss with her hair and clothes before shooing her out of the room. Turning to her dearest friend, she eyed Sarah’s flushed face and knowing look.

“Well, tell me what adventures you’ve had of late.”

“I’ve been very naughty.” Sarah fanned her face, her innocent look at odds with the tiny smirk curling her lips upward.

“What?” Arianna glanced at the closed chamber door. “How? Tell me.”

“I am enjoying the pleasures of men. It’s glorious, and a lot more fun than visiting with those stuffy old men my father parades before me.”

“How do you get the chance? Aren’t you watched? What of your virginity?”

“Oh, my maid is very lenient. She looks the other way and gives me plenty of opportunity. She’s not as mothering as Alba. I give her trinkets in return for her silence. What of it? I’d rather go to my grave knowing a bit of fun before I have to spend a lifetime tied to some old man who hasn’t the wherewithal to look beyond his bank book.” Sarah froze at the sound of footsteps beyond the door, a frown tugging her brows together before she smoothed her expression. “I’ll tell you more later.”

“Aren’t you worried about not being a virgin?”

“Heavens no. With my father’s money it won’t matter.”

“What about pregnancy?” Worry darted through Arianna’s mind.

“I take precautions.” Sarah grinned. “Let’s go eat, I’ll tell you about my adventures later.”

“Sarah, shame on you.” Arianna couldn’t help the tiny measure of envy that ripped through her.

“I told you I was naughty, I meant it.” Sarah winked. “Men like a woman who isn’t so prudish.”

They rushed back to the main parlor to wait for Signor Allegretti to call them to dine. Other women chatted and giggled around Arianna. Still stunned by Sarah’s admission, her mind worked overtime, wondering how many of the other girls indulged themselves sexually, and then the musicians began to play one of Arianna’s favorite songs. Arianna became absorbed in the music. Tapping her toe to the music, she wanted to sway her hips too. Her head was in the clouds with the notes floating there.

“Arianna?” Her father tapped her on the arm.

“Yes, Papa.” Arianna’s eyes widened in surprise as she focused back to the present. “I’m sorry. I was listening to the music. I didn’t hear you.”

“I see that.” Her father smiled. “I was just introducing you to Signor Clayne MacDagon.” He turned to the man at his side and said, “My daughter loves anything musical. She sings like an angel.”

“Thank you, Father, you’re very kind.” Arianna curtsied.

“I love music as well.” Signor MacDagon bowed at his waist, taking her hand in his. “Please call me Clayne, Signorina.”

Arianna looked into the most handsome face she’d ever seen. Butterflies suddenly set free within her. This had to be the man Sarah mentioned. He had the bluest eyes. They were bluer than the Mediterranean Sea. His jaw was chiseled, his features bold, yet they fit together perfectly. Tall and muscular, he wore his breeches nicely. Arianna’s heart skipped as she warmed all over.

“It’s very nice to meet you.” His smile was overly bright.

“Thank you, Signor.” Arianna nodded. “I’m honored to meet you.”

“Our luncheon is served,” the butler announced from the dining room’s doorway.

“May I escort you to your chair?” Clayne offered his arm.

Arianna looked to her father, who stepped back and motioned for her to accept the invitation. Bowing low, he quickly moved away.

Clayne continued to hold his arm out to her. Reluctant to touch him, she stared at his arm for a moment before offering a weak smile. Patiently, he waited, a kind, warm look in his eyes. Swallowing against the emotions choking her, she reached for his arm. A droplet of perspiration trailed between her breasts, tickling with each slow inch. Flushing, she placed her hand in the crook of his elbow.

His arm was hot to the touch, but it was the electricity racing up her arm that startled her. She was about to pull away when he lowered his arm, capturing her hand. Placing his other hand on hers, he held her in place. “Be at peace, Arianna, I only wish to escort you. May I call you Arianna?”

“Oh.” Arianna gasped at the searing agony along her shoulder. Her birthmark burned through her like a knife stabbing her. The pain caught her completely of
f guard, stealing the very air from her chest. As quick as it flared, it subsided. As if cool lips touched it, the pain faded into a tingling, sensual sensation.

Her skin felt hot, tight, her breasts fuller, heavier, and her nipples were tender. Arianna was nearly overpowered by a desire to rub herself against this strange man who held her arm. Stunned at her body’s reactions and her bizarre thoughts, heat rushed to her face. She glanced around for a seat, anxious to collect herself.

“Oh my, I need to sit down.” Arianna looked up into his eyes and into flames. His eyes have flames. Bright blue-tipped flames roared to life, calling to her, seducing her. To regroup her composure, she quickly looked away. Surely I’m imagining the flames.

“Come, Arianna, I’ll take you to your chair. You should have some water, you look faint.” For some reason his familiarity annoyed her. “What hurts, my Arianna?” His voice was soothing.

I’m an emotional wreck, and I’m not his Arianna.

“I feel too warm, is all. I’m not your Arianna, sir,” she bit out in a low whisper. “Please, just help me to my chair. I do need a glass of water.”

“Certainly.” The weight of his hand on her waist was a constant comfort. He walked her into the dining room, leading her to a chair. He sat in the empty chair next to her.

When he released Arianna’s arm, she moaned. The absence of contact with him stunned her. Now, she was chilled to the bone, as if she’d walked into an ice storm. Shivers raced up her spine, making her shake like she was suffering from fever.

“Are you all right?” Sarah eyed her with curiosity from across the table. “You look unwell.”

“I’m warm.” Arianna reached for her fan, desperation making her fingers tremble.

“Yes, it does seem exceptionally warm in here,” Sarah agreed.

Arianna could feel Clayne’s eyes upon her. They seared into her. Her shoulder continued to tingle, more than a tad disconcerting.

Surely, this had to all be her imagination. The mark pulsed, and seeking relief she rubbed her back against the chair. Her entire body tingled, starting from the birthmark down to her very core. She shifted in her seat, a strange, hollow ache settling between her legs. Images filled her mind of the man beside her, kissing her breasts, biting her nipples.
