Karen crossed her arms over her chest and looked disappointed. “Are you happy?”
“So happy,” I said.
“Mm-hmm,” Karen said. “I’m only doing this for you because you’re hurt and I love you. As soon as you’re better, I want you to try that diet again.”
“Right,” I said midchew. “I’ll totally get right back on it. I’m so hurt, though. It’s going to be weeks.” I stuffed my hand into the bag and fished around for the side of hash brown bites that was supposed to come with the breakfast sandwich meal. After finding them, I filled a hand full of the greasy little potatoes and shoveled them into my mouth.
“This is just sad,” Karen said.
I smiled at her through my mouthful of food. “Does this look like the face of someone sad?” I pointed at the bag that the food had been in. “You got the ice cream, right?”
She rolled her eyes and nodded.
I motioned for her to get it and hand it over. “Chocolate devastation cookie dough, right?”
She pulled a pint of it from the bag.
“Hell yeah,” I said.
