Wanted for Life Page 29

by Allison B Hanson

Pudge jumped down from the bed and came up to her face to lick it. He wasn’t alerted, so she knew no one lurked in the darkness. She was safe.

  But there was something…

The something revealed itself in a tight pain across her abdomen and wrapped itself uncomfortably around her back. She let out a gasp of surprise and closed her eyes.

“What is it?” Colton asked, his voice rough with sleep.

  “It’s time.”

  …

  It was time.

Every agent worth his badge had at least three escape routes planned out at all times. But Colton was no longer an agent. He was a teacher.

Still, he’d mapped out seven ways to get to the hospital. He was prepared for everything from bad weather to traffic, from construction to alien invasion. No matter what happened, his son would not be born in the back seat of a police cruiser, as Colton had been.

He was ready. Or he thought he was.

Now that the moment was upon them, he couldn’t seem to breathe right and his chest hurt.

His wife was in pain, as evident by the way she’d made a new word, “Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!”

“I can’t believe I did this to you,” he said, jumping out of bed. He had no idea what to do next.

“Who do you think did this to me?”

She’d never looked so scary. He had no doubt she could kick his ass and give birth at the same time. His wife was tough like that.

“No. I know it was me, but what was I thinking?” The only answer was a dry look. “Right. I wasn’t really thinking.”

When he’d suggested they make a baby, she’d said okay. So really, this was her fault. Though he would wait for another time to share this incredible nugget of wisdom.

  “Colton?” she called.

He came back in the room after realizing he’d nearly gotten in the car and left without her. “Sorry. Sorry. What should I do?” he asked, all seven plans long gone.

“Kiss me.” She was smiling at him, no doubt amused by his panic.

How the hell could she be so calm?

He kissed her. Taking a deep breath, he pulled back to smile at her. “We’re going to have a baby,” he said, bright waves of happiness coursing through him.

She smiled, and he knew she felt exactly the same way. “Yeah. We’re going to be a family.”
