Shifted Redemption [The Cursed Wolves Series, Book Three] Page 19

  Gavin rises. "You're...you're kidding!"

"I am not," Amelia says with a grin. "Of course, if you don't want to do this professionally, I understand—"

"Are you kidding? You just handed me a ticket out of here. Of course I'll join," Gavin says, over the moon. "I turn eighteen at the start of my senior year, but after I graduate, I should be free."

"Excellent," she says, shaking Gavin's hand. "I'll be talking to your friend, Marion, too. We always need medics and other positions that require high intelligence." Then she turns to me. "Beckah? What would you like to do?"

  * * * * *

"I can't believe you're both going to hunter school after graduation," Tyler says as he reclines in the plane seat beside me.

"Apparently, they have an academy out in Colorado," I say. "Amelia told me all about it. They only let in people they think have potential." I took two weeks to think it over before calling Amelia and telling her I was on board.

I look down at the clouds and the Pacific Ocean far below. At least I have the window seat.

"That's awesome," Chaz says from the row behind us. He sits beside Gavin, who is also going to Hawaii with us to spend a week. On the other side of the aisle, Alan rests with headphones on and Valerie, I'm sure, has her hand over his. Marion and Cammie sit behind them, and Gia two rows ahead of us. Despite Tyler's cash, we're all in the economy section. Tyler might be loaded now, but he's not the type to flaunt it, and that only makes me love him more. Not to mention, his parents' private jet vanished just as it was supposed to, thanks to the Silverlight Guild.

It's been two weeks since we overthrew Mr. and Mrs. Rose, and despite the chaos at the mansion that Tyler (and Chaz, and Cammie, and Valerie, and Alan) now call home, he's managed to carve out this vacation for us. And that was after he told the agent to roll back all the horrible rent increases and property taxes, lowering them to actual, reasonable rates.

  Screw the investors, Tyler said.

"Things okay with your parents?" Tyler whispers.

"Well, Mom and Dad have things to work on, but Dad is finally going to go to therapy," I say. "Never thought that would happen. They're back in New York now. I think us getting back together placated him. Not that I'm going to give him your money, of course. Unless he plays nice, no boat for him."

Tyler grins. "At least now you have a lever. And my parents are in hunter prison for the rest of their lives."

  I've made my decision.

I'm staying in Tower, and flying my parents out for a visit once a month. Dad wanted me to go back home, to get back into Averly, but my college is done and paid for. There's no need, and thankfully he didn't push the matter. Since the hunters found him wandering the woods around Gia's cabin, right after they found the dead and crumbled rose bush, he's been a bit more sheepish than before. As if the experience has humbled him.

I place my head on Tyler's shoulder as the pilot comes on and announces we'll be at our destination in less than an hour. For a week, Tyler and I are going to enjoy the white sand beaches of Hawaii, thousands of miles from home, and most of all, we're going to enjoy each other.

"I love you," I say as I drift off with a smile on my face.

Tyler kisses the top of my head. "And I love you, too, no matter where we go."

  THE END

A Special Note and Ask From The Author

I had immense enjoyment writing the conclusion of this book, and the Cursed Wolves series unfolded the way it did partly due to my personal experience. Rent gouging is a serious issue in many vulnerable communities, and unfortunately I know all too well the horrific effects it has on low-income and elderly residents. It is even more unfortunate that people like the Roses actually exist, and they are operating ther businesses in a predatory fashion to take advantage of people who often cannot escape their situations.

This problem is especially bad in manufactured housing communities, where many elderly folks settle down to spend their retirement years. Large corporations are buying these communities and imposing severe rent and fee increases that lead to massive profits for investors and company owners, and immense suffering, homelessness, illness, and sometimes even stress-related death to the residents.

If you would like to help in the fight against rent gouging, or know of someone trapped in such a situation, you can visit MHAction.org for more information or if you would like to donate to the fight against rent gouging.

Regardless of what you choose to do, I hope that you enjoyed this final installment of the Cursed Wolves series. Your support and reviews are always appreciated!
