“I’d like that,” Rachael said. “What about sunrise?”
“We could watch that,” Guy said and looked up. “We can watch the snow fall too, since we’re going north soon.”
“Can’t say I’ve ever seen snow fall.”
“I can show you that and any other phenomena that you could only experience on a planet.”
“What do you think is going to happen to us in the future, Guy?”
“Us?”
“Yeah. You and me, us. Are we going to win this? Lose? Are we just fighting to delay an inevitable end? Or do you really think we got a shot at beating the empire and the sentinels?”
“We do.” Guy didn’t even have to think of that answer. He knew his power growth would pave their way to victory.
“Oh, Guy, is that you?” said the voice of a woman behind the tent, a woman with a very exotic accent. “I was not expecting to see you here.”
Xanthe approached the campfire while holding Averyl’s hand. She peered at Guy with a sly smirk. Rachael looked right up at Xanthe with a frown, grunted, then grabbed Guy’s arm, yanking him closer to her. Rachael laid her head on Guy’s shoulder afterward.
“What are you doing here . . .?” Rachael snarled at Xanthe.
“Averyl and I were catching up when we saw this tent out here,” Xanthe said.
Xanthe sat to Guy’s right, and Averyl sat off to the side. The two uninvited girls just shut their eyes and smiled with a giggle. Rachael clenched Guy’s arm tighter, like she was trying to pull him away from Xanthe and Averyl.
“Sounds like someone forgot to invite me to the party.”
Nijana came to stand at the camp, waving her hand at Guy in a flirty manner.
Xanthe frowned at Nijana, grunted, then grabbed Guy’s arm, yanking him closer to her. And like Rachael, Xanthe laid her head on Guy’s shoulder.
“What are you doing here . . .?” Xanthe snarled at Nijana.
“Don’t worry, Xanthe. I’m not doing the PK thing right now.” Nijana sat in front of Guy. “Mind if I sit here, Guy?”
“Well—”
“Fantastic! So anyway, Guy, I was thinking of new lyrics to add to Dianna’s song. I wonder if it will strengthen its power to call the White Dragon.”
“Guy . . .” Rachael groaned to him. “Is there a reason they all want to hang with you right now?”
“Uh . . . I really don’t know since I set this tent up away from everyone.”
Rachael shifted her wincing face to him. “Did you make a harem behind my back . . .?”
“Oh, relax, Rachael,” Nijana said. “Guy wouldn’t know how to do that, or what to do with one.”
“Well,” Averyl slyly said. “He might.”
Nijana and Averyl grinned at one another, then broke out giggling. Xanthe looked puzzled at the mirror princesses, a puzzled look that Rachael shared.
“What are you two grinning about?” Xanthe asked Nijana and Averyl.
“Don’t worry about it,” Nijana said. “I can hardly remember it, anyway.”
“Same here,” Averyl said, then giggled again.
Xanthe grabbed Guy’s arm and tugged him closer to her soft and heavy chest. Rachael snarled and jerked Guy back to her.
Xanthe and Rachael gave each other dirty looks.
Nijana sang a lovely song to Guy, and when finished, she sat back and gazed into his eyes, her black lipstick painted lips parted slightly like she desired a kiss. Averyl ended up laying down on her front, feet up and waving about, her chin resting on her cupped palms. It looked like Averyl was enjoying gawking at all the girls in the tent, so Guy thought. Averyl shifted her smile to Guy and winked at him.
It’s not a harem!
Yeah, right.
Guy had a big problem. He was stuck in a tent with three fae girls and a shadow angel, fighting for his attention.
It was a good problem to have.
Epilogue
Rain opened her eyes and woke up from her coma.
Strange noises were screeching in the air that caused her hands and legs to tremble. Rain panicked as she looked about, eying the machina devices around the bed she was in. She was unsure of where she was, but saw that star-dweller machina was everywhere, glowing with blue and white light.
There was a door in the room she woke up in. It led to a hallway full of star-dwellers screaming. They were shouting for help. This was a star-dweller city, and it was under attack. Rain rolled from the bed, causing the machina to blare and scream weird sounds. She hit the floor, noted that she was barefoot and wearing a white gown over her fae body. It covered her wings, too.
She accessed her Status screen, wincing. No equipment or weapon, and come to think of it, she barely remembered how to use her powers since getting afflicted.
And she still did not know why the star-human, Patrick O’Connor’s ship, the Gabriel, had come under attack. O’Connor insisted she had entered some kind of machina device called a stasis field during the assault. Those were her last memories before waking in the star-dweller room.
The door ahead exploded, sending its slagged remains everywhere, and a massive shockwave that threw Rain to the wall back first. She got up just in time to see two large and heavy men, their bodies covered in suits of armor made of star-dweller machina, complete with blinking lights. The machina men spotted Rain and raised their wrists at her. There was some sort of device on them. She was not sure what they were—
The first machina man lost his arm from the cut of a sword.
It hit the floor with a clank as a spray of yellow sparks flashed, brightening the dark ceiling and walls. A second slash took the man’s head off. Then that same sword impaled his partner. It poked out the other end. The swordsman withdrew the blade, sending the machina man down, sparks flaring from his chest wound.
The swordsman stepped over the bodies and walked to Rain. Her legs trembled so much she could not stand and ended up crawling backward across the floor until she hit the wall behind.
“Please . . .” Rain pleaded to the swordsman. “I have done nothing wrong.”
“I know that,” the swordsman said, his voice deep. He lowered himself and held one hand out to her. “I’m here to help you.”
She guided her trembling hand to accept it, then peered closer. Rain could not make out the swordsman’s face. It was far too dark in the room.
“You, you wish to help me?” Rain asked.
“Yes,” the swordsman said, and helped Rain stand. “Because I’m going to need your assistance later on.”
“For what?”
“To help me prevent my nephew from getting himself killed.”
Rain noticed there was an information bar above the man’s head. He was afflicted, just like her. She glanced at it.
