“Well,” Stone said, looking out the window at the rainy street. It seemed a fitting day for such revelations, foggy and disconsolate. “Thank you for telling me. You know I wish you the best, Selby. Please don’t hesitate to call if there’s anything I can do to help you.”
“Thank you. I appreciate it. You’re a good man.” He raised his glass. “To…the future.”
Stone clinked his own glass and checked Selby’s aura. He was clearly intoxicated, but not enough to significantly impair him. “I’ve got to be going now—still have a lot to do today. Take care. And I’m serious about ringing me if I can help.”
He left the man sitting there at his table and headed back out into the rain feeling defeated. He had too many plates spinning right now, and it seemed as if suddenly they’d all begun crashing down around his feet. At least he’d thought he’d successfully dealt with the one labeled Selby. It seemed the poor sod couldn’t catch a break, even when he tried to do the right thing.
He chalked it up to fatigue that he made it halfway to the Tube station before the obvious thought occurred to him. Maybe he could keep this particular plate spinning after all. But he didn’t do anything about it until he’d boarded the train and sat slumped into the corner of his seat, watching the tunnel flash by.
As a woman with a handful of shopping bags settled into the seat across from him, he pulled out his phone and pressed a familiar number.
“Aubrey? It’s me. Yes, I’m in London, though I won’t be for long today. Listen—I know you’ll die before you’ll admit it, but I also know you could use some help around the place. How would you feel about having a chat with someone about that?”
