But my reprieve doesn’t last long.
Within five minutes, Borden reemerges with only his boxer swim shorts on.
My eyes zero in on the tattoo on his chest.
The one he had done to always remember me.
I immediately have flash backs to that night. Back to when I’d traced the other tattoos on his chest with my finger...with my tongue.
My heart yearns for him...
My entire body.
Warmth floods between my legs, my breath becomes shortened. I watch, completely and seductively spellbound, as he does a pencil dive into the pool.
His body hasn’t changed at all since that night and my body throbs, pulsating, wanting him.
I’ve never wanted anyone as much as I want him, – I silently concede.
Tyler shouts excitedly in my ear, startling me from my spell just as Borden’s head breaks through the water.
“Nothing better than a midnight swim,” Tyler says loudly and drunkenly and then begins nuzzling my neck. Borden’s eyes hold mine a moment and I see the twisted torture there just before he sinks beneath the surface, swimming away from us. He pops up several feet from us and then disappears again beneath the surface.
My focus is forced away from Borden as I hear a splash and realize that Sharon has joined us and is now swimming towards Borden. I feel sick as she reaches him, entwining herself around him as he breaks the surface.
I move my gaze away from them, unable to watch as a tear slips down my cheek, even as Tyler continues to drunkenly nuzzle me.
Angrily, I swipe it away.
Get yourself together.
Tyler finally releases me and this time I make my escape from his overly amorous and drunken embraces to do a few laps back and forth the pool. As the water flows around me, I try to erase the image of Borden and Sharon, entangled in each other only a few feet away, from my mind. As my muscles tire, I realize the physical workout is doing nothing for my mind. Giving up, I decide to exit the pool and go to bed. At least then I won’t physically see them together.
But as I place my foot on the bottom rung of the ladder, I feel hands around my waist, pulling me back in, further bringing me back into my silent torture.
“Oh no! Not yet, you don’t,” I hear Tyler say in my ear.
He turns me to face him as he whispers, “I have something to ask you. I was going to wait until tomorrow but I can’t wait any longer.”
I see excitement in his eyes, the sincerity in his face and my stomach drops...
I know nothing is going to stop Tyler from what I know he’s about to ask.
Raising his voice slightly, even as I shake my head to try to stop him, he easily ignores me. But knowing what is coming - wanting and wishing desperately and helplessly for it not to happen, not here and now, especially like this – I mentally brace myself as Tyler drunkenly blurts out, “I want to marry you, Cass. Will you do me the honor?”
Complete and shocked silence falls over the pool making it eerily quiet.
I have the sudden feeling like I’m falling, even though it is impossible for me to physically fall while trapped in Tyler’s arms, both of us buoyed by the surrounding water.
“Tyler,” I manage in a whisper, my heart hurting. As if it’s tearing in my chest.
“Say you will Cass,” he murmurs before trying to clumsily kiss me in his drunkeness.
Not knowing what to do, how to handle this, I freeze, and Tyler easily swoops in for a quick sloppy kiss.
As he straightens away from me, he asks joyfully, “Is that a yes?” And then not waiting for an answer, he whoops and starts swirling us around and around in circles in the water as he says, “It’s a yes, I know it’s yes!”
He’s completely oblivious to the shell shock from across the pool.
But Sharon isn’t.
I can see that pieces of the puzzle are coming together in her mind.
