He glanced casually at the newspaper’s headlines and his posture stiffened. Joe’s hands began to tremble. He read the article through twice. He couldn’t believe what he was reading. There had been a fatal shooting at the Emerald Club. Karl had been shot by a policeman and seriously wounded. Chief Superintendent David Glendenning had been named as the suspect and he had then turned the gun on himself with fatal results. Why? Joe wondered. Why would David shoot Karl? They were supposed to be friends.
Slowly the tension that Joe had been feeling since his confrontation with Karl began to drain from his body. Karl being injured meant that he would not be able to follow them, for now at least. It gave him more time to make sure Erica was safe.
He looked up to see Erica coming towards him, a broad smile on her beautiful face. Without hesitation, Joe folded the newspaper and placed it firmly in the litter bin.
