Ethan didn’t spend much longer on the ground before he pulled himself to his feet and approached me. He stood inches from me before placing a small peck on my lips. “What was that for?” I asked.
“Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’d still be hiding from everyone I love, and I don’t know how to thank you enough for that.” He kissed me again on the forehead.
I grabbed his arms. “You never need to thank me for that.”
His smile stretched and Derrick began hopping on his toes. I looked down at him suspiciously as Derrick continued speaking. “And I hope I’ve been able to help you through the loss of your husband, too.”
“You know you have.”
He smiled and pulled me into his arms before taking a step back. “Well in that case, I need you to know, Elena Brookes, that I have always loved you for the generous, caring, and beautiful person you are. You’ve been a single mother for years without complaint, and I envy your strength. But I don’t want you to be a single mom anymore. With the approval of your son, and hopefully your husband, I promise that I’ll never leave you alone. I promise that I’ll never let you open another door or carry another heavy grocery bag. I promise to act as the father your son needs, but I promise I will never let him forget his real dad.” Ethan dropped to one knee and reached in his pocket as he continued talking. “I don’t know what promises you need to say yes, but I promise that if you do, you’ll have everything you want in life. Lena, will you marry me?”
He flipped open the top of the ring box and displayed a beautiful, diamond ring. My eyes widened and my hand flew to my mouth. Derrick stood at my knees, bouncing excitedly. I looked at him. “What do you say, buddy?” I asked him.
“Yes,” he shouted, running and jumping in Ethan’s arms.
I smiled and dropped to my knees with them, allowing Ethan to slip the ring on my finger. We sandwiched Derrick between us as I fell into his arms and whispered the word he was waiting to hear.
“Yes.”
