by Meg Buchanan

Mere and Sophie had almost finished scraping the gold letters off the front window of the office. “Almost.” Mere wiped the flakes of paint off the scraper with a cloth. “One letter to go.” Only the final ‘S’ of Samuels was left on the window. He and William never did get around to having the sign changed from Samuels and Son to Samuels and Hennessey, now neither existed.

“Sophie is getting the broom to sweep the mess off the carpet and then we’ll be done,” said Mere.

The furniture, their office chairs, the drawing boards, the trestle table, bookcase, the set of wide shallow drawers the drawings were kept in, had already been loaded onto the wagon and tied down.

Once they closed the door, all that was finished with. A new life for all of them. McKenzie had accepted the deal. The Scotsman Mine as a straight swap for the claims. The contract with the lands department was finished, they’d made good money, and the business had sold for more than they thought possible.

He took the rope William passed him, pulled it tight, then tied it to the iron hook by the axle.

“We’ll meet you at the farm and help you unload.” He stood back and surveyed the wagon. What was on it, represented what was left of his father’s life’s work and his until now.

William went over to the door of the office, just as Sophie came out.

Sophie had a broom in one hand and dustpan covered with gold paint flakes in the other. “Do you want to keep these as a souvenir?” she asked.

Even now after almost seven months married to her, the way she spoke and way she moved still enthralled him. In a week, they’d finally be leaving on their honeymoon. They’d spend a few years travelling around Europe and then he’d decide what he wanted to do next.

“I’ll give that a miss. Scatter them to the winds.” One thing was for certain, what he did next wouldn’t be surveying. He’d had enough of that.

Sophie held the dustpan up, and the gold flakes fluttered down the street in a glittering stream.

  About the Author

I live in Paeroa, a small town in New Zealand, with my husband and a black labrador.

I love creating books about ordinary people doing interesting things. The characters in my story are just a little better looking and more charismatic than in real life, but they think and feel like normal people.
