don’t even know your name. You can’t be that ambitious.”
“Doesn’t matter. I’m still the man you need, and what your parents want in a future son-in-law.”
“Okay, and how do you figure that?”
I leaned back.
And I punched that beautiful face as hard as I could.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. How could I hit a girl? Well, she asked for it. Okay, that sounds kind of wrong, but I want you to know that I don’t condone violence, especially against women. I was just so caught up in the moment and FACE PUNCH seemed to be changing lives so I hit her…
Twice.
Okay, the second one was reflex. I didn’t mean it. And I’m sure it had less strength than the first, if that makes you feel any better.
I just want you to know, that I’m not a woman abuser. And I wanted the best for her.
So that’s why I hit her…
Okay. Okay. I hear you. I’m an idiot…
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” She screamed and spat in my face after the second blow had lost its sting. I could already see a welt forming on her pretty face.
“FACE PUNCH,” I said as she slapped me across the face.
“Ow,” I said in response. “You’re breaking the rules of FACE PUNCH.”
“I don’t care about some game! You just hit me in the face! You know what my father is going to do to you when he finds out!”
“Can I tell him about this myself?”
“Are you insane?!” she shrieked.
“You know what, I am. I’m so crazy for you that I did the most insane thing I could think of to prove how much I cared. I just had to show you that I wasn’t afraid to get what I want. And the only way I could do it was by punching you in your pretty face.”
“Wow, you really believe that,” she said. But thank God, it was without spit.
“I do. I really want a shot with you.”
“Well, don’t hit me again. Ever…and I guess I’ll give you one.”
“Awesome,” I said, almost half-leaping in the air.
“Don’t be a dork,” she scolded. “And you’ll still have to ask my parents first. I’m not going behind their backs again.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that. Give me your home number and I’ll call them tonight.”
“And one more condition. When you meet them, please don’t punch them in the face.”
“I can’t promise that,” I said with a cheesy grin plastered across my face. She glared at me angrily.
“I’m serious.”
“I know. I was just kidding,” I said as she shook her head, pulled out a small notepad and pen and wrote down her number. Even when she handed it to me, I was in awe, like I had just been given the Holy Grail.
FACE PUNCH had worked. I had just gotten a date with Dana, the most beautiful, popular and smartest girl in school. ME! I didn’t know how I was going to pull of being her boyfriend, but at least I had a shot. A glorious shot. If it wasn’t for so many people looking at me, I would’ve skipped through those halls. I was in the clouds so much that I was only half-aware of the boy standing next to me.
“Wow, you got a date with Dana. Congrats!”
“I know,” I beamed. “I’m so happy.”
“Are you worried about it at all?”
“Oh, definitely. I mean, I’m not on her level and –“
I got punched in the face.
I was called to the principal’s office later on. Students had been attacking others all day but supposedly I was the only boy to hit a girl. Not that Dana told on me. It was just a concerned teacher that asked her about the welt and my name slipped out before she realized it. So there I was, sitting across from the principal, waiting for my sentence…
And I didn’t care.
Punching someone in the face had been so liberating and I felt like a new man. Gooseberry had been right. This was life changing, and mine would never be the same from here on out. I was determined to get whatever I wanted, regardless of the consequences. I had admired Jonathan Lancaster’s note when he had posted it all over the school last week. A note that declared he had nothing to lose and he wasn’t afraid of his enemies. I admired that stance. Because now I felt the same. No one was going to hold me back from achieving my dreams.
“Have you been listening?!” the principal yelled, breaking my thoughts.
“Not really,” I said. “I did nothing wrong.”
“You punched a girl in the face!”
“She didn’t press charges. It was the teacher who reported this. Talk to Dana. Everything’s fine.”
“We don’t settle for abuse at this school.”
I laughed at that statement considering recent events.
“You know what,” he said. “That’s it. From here on out, you’re going to be suspended indefinitely, until we get your parents down here and figure out what to do with you.”
“You seem tense,” I said suddenly, leaning back in my chair. “What’s bothering you?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“No, tell me,” I said. “What’s wrong? Why are you so angry?”
“Because the whole student body is punching each other in the face! And there’s nothing I can do about it! It’s out of control!”
I smiled and leaned forward in my seat.
“Nothing you can do? Out of control? I have just the remedy.”
“Oh yeah? What’s that, Nathan?”
…you know what I did.
