Only the Dead Know Page 21

by C. J. Dunford

This is my first foray into contemporary crime. I like my writing to be character-focussed, so the thought of having to go by the rules of lots of police procedure has never held much appeal for me.

However, Truce is an unusual man, with an unusual background. He’s not one to strictly follow the rule book. He’s very against breaking rules, but if there is a way to slip around them, then he’ll probably take it. Especially if he’s been listening to his best friend, Leighton, who is the archetypical rebel without a cause.

Truce is undiagnosed, but almost certainly on the Autistic spectrum. This is a big deal for me. A close family member is a high-functioning autistic like Truce, and I wanted to reflect in my writing how such people can often come across as normal while having a hidden internal struggle.

To add to that, poor Truce is also recovering from PTSD, and as a former psychologist I find that is a fascinating topic to write about. Again, it’s another issue that isn’t well-enough understood and needs more investigation.

When you wrote the character Truce how did you want readers to respond to him?

I hope my readers will be on Truce’s side. He’s frequently up against it in trying to do what he thinks is right. He has quirks and traits that the other characters find difficult to understand, but I’m hoping the readers will learn to understand him and appreciate his difficulties. He’s tough and he can be broody, but when you get to know him, he’s rather sweet. (And he would hate anyone saying that about him!)

Who is your favourite character in the book?

Obviously I champion Truce. However, I have a bit of a soft spot for Leighton. I like most of the characters — I even have a little affection for Cooper.

What is the most interesting reader feedback you've ever received?

Most often people ask me what is going to happen next. I’m sure they’d be disappointed if I actually told them. The best feedback is simply when someone tells you they have enjoyed your work.
