by Alan Paul

DUMBLE 150-WATT STEEL STRING SINGER WITH MATCHING 4×12 BOTTOM

Fitted with 6550 power tubes and four 100-watt EVs. For the recording of Texas Flood, Stevie used a single Dumble that was owned by Jackson Browne. Shortly thereafter, Stevie acquired a Dumble of his own.

MARSHALL MAJOR 200-WATT HEAD WITH 4×12 DUMBLE BOTTOM

Fitted with 6550 power tubes and four 100-watt EVs.

  FENDER LATE ’60S VIBRATONE

This amp is essentially an equivalent of a Leslie 16 and features a spinning baffle inside that creates a vibrato effect. This cabinet can be heard clearly on songs like “Cold Shot” and “The Things (That) I Used to Do.” This speaker cabinet was driven by one of the Vibroverbs.

  PEDALS

  IBANEZ TUBE SCREAMER

Stevie started with the original TS808 but, according to guitar tech René Martinez, he used just about every type of Tube Screamer at one point or another, including the TS9 and TS10 Classic.

  VOX WAH

Stevie preferred original ’60s Vox wahs.

  VINTAGE DALLAS-ARBITER FUZZ FACE

  Later modded by César Diaz.

  TYCOBRAHE OCTAVIA

  ROGER MAYER OCTAVIA

  UNIVIBE UNIVOX FM-NO 49.5

  Used briefly.

  CUSTOM-MADE SPLITTER BOX

Featured one input and six outputs to send his guitar signal to six different amplifiers simultaneously.

  MXR LOOP SELECTOR

Stevie used this pedal when playing live in order to take his Tube Screamer in and out of his signal chain.

  ROLAND DIMENSION D

Used in the studio during Texas Flood and other releases for a subtle chorus-type effect, this can be heard clearly on “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” “Texas Flood,” and “Pride and Joy.” “One effect that Stevie liked to use when we mixed Texas Flood was this really obscure Roland delay/chorus that gave a little bit of a growl sound,” says engineer/producer Richard Mullen. “It was a stereo device that created phasing effects, which you can hear on the solo to ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ and the end solo on ‘Pride and Joy.’ During the mixdown, Stevie sat at the board and brought that effect in and out as the song progressed. He used the same effect on Couldn’t Stand the Weather, too.”

  FENDER MEDIUM PICKS

Stevie preferred using the back, or “fat” end of the pick.

  EARTH III MUSIC NOTE STRAPS

Made by the Music Note Strap Co., started in the late ’70s by Richard Oliveri in Staten Island, New York.

  STRINGS

GHS Nickel Rockers gauged .013, .015, .019, .028, .038, .058—tuned down one half step (low to high: Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb), akin to Jimi Hendrix. In his last few years, he switched to .011, .015, .019, .028, .038, .054.
