“Tell me the truth, is there really an emergency or is this a setup to get Langston and Liesel to like each other again?” Enzo asks, glaring at me.
“There is a real emergency. But this could be the exact thing they need to bring them back together again,” I say.
“Or drive them further apart,” Enzo says.
I roll my eyes. “Always so negative.”
I reach into my pocket to look at the pictures on my phone again. I’m sad we have to step away from their birthday for even a minute, but I’m happy we have finally found a good balance between keeping our family safe and running a criminal empire that does plenty of good, along with the less than legal parts of the business.
I feel the crumpled envelope in my pocket I put in my pocket after I left the vault earlier but never read.
Beckett pulls up to the docks, and we all get out.
“I’ll go get a boat ready, so we can meet them,” Beckett says.
Enzo and I nod.
Enzo takes my hand while I start opening the envelope. “I think we should get married. Have the fancy big wedding you’ve always wanted. We have our life figured out now; the kids are old enough; we have everyone we love back in our lives. We can do it at the Miami home or in Alaska if you prefer. I don’t care. I just want to celebrate our love every chance we get.”
He grabs my cheeks and kisses me hard and desperately, turning me on in only the way he can.
I slowly break the kiss. “We can’t fuck here; we have a job to do and kids to get back to.”
He shrugs. “Just getting you ready for later tonight. So what do you say? Marry me again, stingray? With our entire family and friends there?”
I pretend to think about it, but I already know I’m going to say yes. In the passionate kiss, I dropped the envelope’s contents on the floor. I pick up the single sheet of paper, and the opening sentence catches my eye.
“Stingray?” Enzo asks, waiting for an answer.
I hold up a hand for him to wait a second so I can read the note.
Stingray,
I’m so sorry that I’m gone. I’m sorry about the pain you are in at my loss. I’m sorry I’m not there to protect you. But I know it’s for the best. If I come back, danger will follow me. And I don’t want to ever put you in danger again. I will come back when it’s safe. I hope you have found the love you were always meant to find. And if you are reading this, I was right, and you won the games. You are Mrs. Black. I’ll send this note to Archard to give to you after you win. And if Enzo is reading this, then tell Kai I’m alive, you dipshit. If stingray is reading this, keep it to yourself. For now, I must stay dead.
Love,
—Z
My eyes water reading the note—Zeke’s alive. And just like that, my heart finishes healing. My world is whole again.
“Kai, what is it?” Enzo asks.
I consider going against Zeke and telling Enzo Zeke is alive. But I know Zeke will reappear in our lives when the time is right. Because sometimes the people we love come back from the dead. I think about my father. Sometimes they stay dead.
But I have hope Zeke will come back. We will see each other again. Our family will one day be whole again.
“Do you still have that lighter?” I ask Enzo.
He nods slowly, reaches into his pocket and hands it to me.
I light the note on fire, toss it to the sand, and I wait for it to burn to ash. I choose to let Zeke’s secret stay hidden because sometimes people need to stay dead until it’s safe for them to be alive again.
“What was in that note?” Enzo asks.
“Do you trust me?”
“With my life.”
“Then trust you will find out when the time is right.”
Enzo sighs. “I hate that I let you be the leader sometimes.”
I give him side-eye. “Let me?”
“Fine, I take it back. I love that you are the queen you deserve to be. You were always meant to be Mrs. Black.”
I kiss him. “That I was.”
“What was in the note?” he tries again.
“It was really good,” I say with a grin as we walk down the pier.
He sighs. “But you aren’t going to tell me?”
“Nope. Someday, but not today.”
“You are one frustrating woman.”
“I know.”
“So will you marry me again?”
“Someday.”
He frowns. “Why not now?”
Because I want everyone I love there, including Zeke. “You’ll see.”
He huffs.
My phone rings, and I answer Clifton, listen to him talk for a minute, and then hang up.
“Are you going to tell me what that was about?” Enzo asks.
“That I can do. Clifton called to say they were able to handle the attack. They thought they were hauling drugs, but Clifton and the crew captured the men. We don’t need to go.”
“Good, because I need to punish you for not telling me why you won’t marry me.” He slaps me on the ass and then scoops me up in his arms. Eyeing one of our yachts docked near us, he heads in that direction.
“What about Beckett?” I ask.
“This won’t take long.”
“The kids?”
“They will understand.” He devours my lips as he carries me onto the ship. The crew on board is used to seeing us like this and don’t even bat an eye at Enzo carrying me down the stairs to use one of the bedrooms.
“Langston and Liesel?”
He shuts the door behind us as he tosses me on the bed. He shrugs. “They will probably kill each other.”
I laugh as he jumps on the bed and starts removing my shirt.
“Are you ready to be punished, Mrs. Black?”
“Definitely.”
He slaps my ass again before kissing me like it’s the first and last time. Because with us, you never know. Danger is all around us. Every day could be our last together. So we make the most of every day.
We undress each other quickly, and Enzo is inside me thrusting in record time, slapping my ass occasionally to serve as my punishment for keeping secrets from him.
“Truth or lie, I have a cousin who wants to fight me for control of the company,” I say.
I laugh as he thrusts again.
“Lie.”
Another thrust.
“You have a sister who wants to fight you for custody of our kids.”
“Lie.”
He thrusts again, and the truth or lies game grows more serious as our orgasms grow closer together.
“Truth or lie, you love me, and our family comes before the empire.”
“Always.”
“Truth or lie, you trust me to keep secrets from you because I only do it to protect those we love.”
“Truth, I trust you with my life, our kids, this empire. You were always the right person for the job.”
“And you were always the right person for me.”
Enzo thrusts again, and I come hard around his cock. But he lied earlier, when he said he was going to fuck me quick. We fuck two more times before we go find Beckett and return to the kid’s birthday party. We almost always tell each other the truth. But every once in a while, we tell a lie. Because sometimes the lies protect us or those we love. Sometimes the truth does irrecoverable damage.
But whether we are telling a truth or a lie, there is one thing we both agree on—love wins.
