Before I met the shifters, the things I wanted in life had been so simple. I lived a life of fear, sheltered from the truths of the world that I had been so afraid of. But I’m not afraid anymore.
I’m not afraid of the dark, the creatures of the night, of Charles.
Because even as night descends around us, stars peek through the shadows. And they shine brighter in the darkness.
It doesn’t matter what happened between Elias and me—what lies were told, what secrets were kept—we were destined to know each other, and we barely got a chance. He’s still out there, and I’ll stop at nothing to find him.

This book started in my year-nine classroom when I scribbled down an idea on the corner of my English book. Of course, the idea was too long for a one-page creative writing assignment, so I tore the piece of paper and took it home. But I had no idea of what it would later become, and without the help and support from so many generous people, this book wouldn’t exist.
First and foremost, to my readers: I can never thank you enough. Your support means more than I can say. To Katie, who has given me nothing but unconditional encouragement, thank you for easing my anxieties and cheering me on every step of the way. You celebrate my achievements like they’re your own and always remind me to be proud of myself, no matter what.
I owe so much of my gratitude to the team at Wattpad. Thank you to Nick Uskoski, Amanda Ferreira, and Leah Ruehlicke, who took a chance on my story. You, along with fellow writers in the Paid Stories program, helped me realize that something I saw as a silly hobby had the potential to become so much more. I-Yana Tucker, thank you for your kindness and helpful explanations. And a special thanks to Deanna McFadden. Your patience, advice, and insight have been invaluable to me. You’ve helped me grow as a writer, and I’m so grateful for all that I’ve learned from you.
Lastly, I thank my parents. As a child who hated reading, your bribery was the only thing that would get me to pick up a book.
Without that, I never would’ve made it here today.
