Aidan leaned up on his tiptoes and angled a little farther so he could keep an eye on the critter. “Golly! Did you see that, Ma?”
“Aidan! I will not tolerate such language!” Mrs. Kastain lunged to snatch a handful of Aidan’s hair, just as, with a sound that was more screech than whinny, the bays leaped forward. The nigh horse whinnied and rose up on its back legs, causing the off one to shy away from it. The wagon skated on the snow.
“Whoa!” Jackson yelled.
But it was too late.
The horses had surged too close to the edge of the bridge! One wheel slipped off the side!
The wagon was going over!
