"I should've had you get a couple of their steak hoagies." Jacob sat down his third empty can of soda.
"You can't be still hungry." Emily looked down at the two slices she was barely able to finish.
"I'm a growing boy who has a very active lifestyle." Jacob winked at her. "Maybe Zach will get as active as me someday."
Emily blushed because she knew what he was making reference about.
Zach threw a pillow at him and gave him a look signaling he'd better shut his mouth. Jacob laughed at his brother's response for wanting to protect her from embarrassment.
"Where's Madison?" Will's question made everyone turn and look at Alex. She and Emily were the only ones Madison kept in contact with, and they probably knew where she was.
This, of course, had Jacob's attention. He noticed her not being there but didn't want to create a scene by asking where she was today.
"She knew he was going to be here." Alex turned and glared at Jacob. "So, she went to be alone to wherever she goes when she's stressed."
'Orfeo and the offspring are out there.'
Jacob's wolf made this silent claim to him. The images of his mother and Rose's bodies ran through his mind for the millionth time since their death. Madison was out there by herself. What if the vampires knew she was his mate? It seemed everyone else did. Would they go after her even though they hadn't formed their bond yet?
"Hey, I'm going for a ride." Jacob stood and tossed his pizza box into the garbage.
"You're gonna miss the second half of the game." Anthony sounded like it would be the most devastating thing that could happen today. Jacob waved him off and set off to do something he may regret later.
It took him less than ten minutes on his bike to get to the spot he knew he would find Madison. His wolf sensed her presence and assured him she was all right. The park was empty as most people didn't visit this time of the year. Most couldn't handle the cold or the wind coming in off the lakes. He parked his bike and ran several miles up the hill to the spot where he knew he would find her.
***
Madison loved this time of the year. It was cold enough she didn't have to worry about anyone sneaking up on her through the trails and watching what she did with her magic.
So much had changed since last night. After she'd left Zach's, after the whole Jacob fiasco, she went and talked to her great grandmother times four, her great, great, great, great grandmother. She had to see if she had any answers to what was going on.
Madison learned the legends she had heard since she was a little girl might not be fairytales at all. There may be other things that go bump in the night other than enchanters and enchantresses. She told her grandmother about the wolf and a certain boy. Finally, she had to tell what this boy's name was, and her grandmother was aware of the Lovells.
Madison tried to get her grandmother to tell her what she meant about them having unique qualities, but all she said was for Madison to trust her exceptional instincts. All was coming together for a reason, as she felt evil was coming to West Lakes. Madison tried to get her to explain herself more, but she kept saying Madison needed to believe what her inner self was telling her, look into the eyes of the beast and you will find the soul.
One last bit of helpful information her grandmother gave her was the circle inside the circle when she was alone. There was a particular spell she could say that only those of the supernatural world could cross over. All others would be stopped from entering. This was a good way she said to determine if a certain boy she favored had anything special about him.
Jacob watched as Madison sat in some sort of circle she had created on the ground. There were rocks placed all around her, and she appeared to be in deep mediation. It's now or never. He stripped down naked and shifted into his wolf form.
Even with her eyes shut, Madison sensed something coming toward her. She squinted, pretending to have her eyes closed, and saw it was the black wolf. He entered the circle and sat down beside her.
Well, that proves he's of the paranormal kind, or the spell grandmother gave me was all a hoax.
Penetrating gray eyes stared at her, and it looked as if it was smiling at her. Flashbacks to Jacob at the dance and last night, both times when he had been caught up in the heat of the moment, rushed through her mind. They were the same eyes then as the ones staring at her now. '
Look into the eyes of the beast and you will find the soul.'
The words were more true now that she was confronted with the situation than it did last night when she thought her grandmother was rambling out gobbledygook.
Madison turned and stared at the black beauty sitting beside her, looking quite content. The more she stared back into his eyes, the more courage she got to finally ask the question she was hoping to get an answer.
"So, Jacob, do you always come to spy on me when I'm here by myself?"
The wolf tilted its head and looked at her like it had no clue as to what she said. It stood on all fours, and she saw it was transforming right in front of her eyes. Paws were becoming hands and feet, the snout was turning into a nose and mouth, and the body was going from black fur to a tanned, muscular, Godlike physique. Madison didn't know if she should scream, run, or stay seated and watch. The change took less than fifteen seconds, and before her stood a naked Jacob Lovell. She was speechless as she looked him up and down. There was only one thing that came to her mind when she looked from his face down to his toes.
"Oh my God, you're naked," Madison screamed out and covered her eyes with her hands. When she peeked out from under her fingers, he was gone.
Did that seriously not happen?
Madison looked around the field and saw it was empty.
I'm going freakin' insane.
Maybe it was the new herbs her grandmother told her to use, or perhaps it was from having Jacob in every other thought that crossed her mind since last night.
"Sorry if I scared you."
The sound of Jacob's voice behind her made Madison jump up from her seated position.
"That was you, wasn't it?" Madison looked him up and down and was thankful he finally had clothes on. Not that she minded the free show, but it was kind of awkward to have a naked guy standing in front of her.
Jacob nodded she was correct.
Madison had no clue what to say next. Once again, Jacob left her speechless.
"Were you surprised?" Jacob sat down on the ground and motioned for her to sit beside him. She sat back down on her blanket she had strewn out.
"No, not really." Madison began to pack up the items she had brought from her mother's herb shop. The place where only those involved with white magic shopped for their needed materials. "I talked to my grandmother last night, and she informed me of things I once thought were only legends." She waved her hand to the place where Jacob had shifted, "And then all that happened and it sort of clarified everything."
"So, what exactly are you? I mean, you know I'm a shifter, werewolf, whatever you want to call us, but I never got the chance to ask anyone about what else there was in our whole big supernatural family. I know there are vampires and seers, but what else is there?"
"I come from a long line of enchantresses." Madison glanced over at Jacob. He had a look of confusion on his face. "Witches," she told him the basic term.
"After all this time with us arguing, you still haven't turned me into a toad or something." He tried to keep a straight face but felt a smile being forced out.
Jacob's playful smirk and witty comment sent Madison into a bout of giggles. "We don't do that sort of thing." She informed him as soon as she got her laughter under control. "I work with the elements and sometimes try to do healing. I haven't dived into the spells that change people into different things. But now you brought that to my attention, I might have to look into it."
Jacob's eyebrows shot up over the fact she would turn him into something absurd.
Madison snickered at the face he was making and patted him on the hand. "That's all con
sidered 'black' magic and is a big no-no in my family. What we do is 'white' magic or magic that will benefit and not harm."
A look of relief washed over Jacob's face.
"You said us before. Is there more to your group or pack than your family?" Madison was curious about who else was involved with this big new world she was finally becoming aware of discovering.
"There's my family, Danny's family, Will and Anthony's families." He glanced over at Madison, and she nodded for him to continue. "We're all in the same pack. My dad's the Alpha." Madison looked like she didn't know what he meant by Alpha. "He's the leader of the whole pack, which is about two hundred of us. Me, Zach, and Adam will eventually become alphas, either of our own pack or if something would happen to our Alpha now. I'm the youngest, so I have a while to go to worry about it."
"What about girls? Are there any in your pack?" Madison knew everyone he'd mentioned, and there weren't any girls in their families except for their moms.
Jacob shook his head. "Shifters don't produce girls with their mates. Only males are born to help with the pack and keep the younger members and mates safe."
"Forget this girl thing. What about this whole mate thing. It makes them sound like animals or something. Not to sound stupid, but what is a mate?"
"The wolf inside of us instantly knows their mate when he first sees her. Usually, this is after we turn eighteen, but me, Zach, and Danny went against all orders and did something we weren't supposed to do a long time ago." Jacob hoped Madison wouldn't ask about that horrible night. He'd have to explain it to her eventually, but at this moment, it wasn't of necessity.
"Have Zach and Danny, or their wolves, found their mates?" Madison knew this answer before Jacob had time to answer. It was so apparent by the way they'd been acting.
Jacob nodded yes. "Alex and Emily."
She slowly moved her head okay as if she was putting this all into perspective. "Has your wolf found its mate yet?" She was afraid to ask this question because she was afraid of the response she might get.
Please don't say, Brindle. Please don't say, Brindle.
Jacob glanced at her from the corner of his eye and saw a look of panic written on her face. It's either she's scared I'm going to say her or afraid that I'm not. He slowly nodded his head. "You."
The expression on her face after his announcement went from nervousness to joy, then back to fright.
"Me." Madison pointed her finger at herself. "Um, how do you know?" She didn't understand all this mate shit he talked about.
Jacob shrugged. "My wolf tells me you're the one. He can pick up on your scent wherever you're at. He can sense when you're happy, sad, angry. I don't know, Madison, it's just this feeling he and I have, and he says we're supposed to be with you."
Madison sensed Jacob becoming frustrated with this whole notion of mates and all the finer details he didn't have the answers for. "And how do you feel about us being these so-called mates?"
Jacob stared straight ahead, not looking at her. He didn't want to see her reaction to the answer he had. "Scared."
"You're scared to be with me?" Madison was confused with his answer.
He shook his head and turned toward her so they made eye contact. "Not scared to be with you. Scared I won't be able to protect you."
Madison let out a snorted laugh. "I can take care of myself."
Jacob had heard his mother say those exact words and now look what happened and where she was at...dead. "There are some things you don't know about." He was referencing Orfeo and the dhampir, obviously something she knew nothing about. "I can't be the mate you want or need me to be right now."
"Whatever." Madison waved him off and turned so she wasn't looking at him. "I think it's your excuse so you can go around banging whoever you want."
He sensed the anger in her words, and his wolf felt the disappointment in her tone. He gently stroked the side of her cheek, and she turned to look at him. Jacob cautiously leaned over with his eyes focused on her lips, hoping she wouldn't try to run away.
The first taste of her was almost enough to send him over the edge. He had kissed many girls before, but there wasn't anyone else he wanted after he'd kissed Madison. The kiss deepened, and Madison scooted closer to him. He pulled her until she was pressed tightly against his side and moved his lips from hers down to her neck. The wolf inside wanted him to bite and claim what was his, but Jacob was trying his best to fight off the 'need.' This wasn't the right time or place for that to be happening.
A moan from Madison brought Jacob's concentration back to the moment. He leaned over far enough toward Madison so she was now laying on the blanket. He lay on top of her and continued to lavish her body with kisses.
Madison couldn't get enough of him. She gripped the back of his head to pull him closer. This was everything she had wanted since their first kiss at the dance. Her hands slipped beneath his shirt. The heat coming from his skin warmed her freezing fingers instantly. She slowly let her fingertips run along the muscles in his back and felt each tremble as she did.
Jacob reached behind him and pulled the extra blanket Madison had been sitting on earlier around them to help block out the cold November air. He was fine in the weather but had felt the iciness of her fingers as they glided gracefully along his spine. Since he was situated in-between her parted legs, he couldn't help the grinding of his groin against the most heated portion of her body. His hand crawled underneath the sweatshirt she had on and found its way under her bra. Madison bucked against him as soon as he teased her with his fingertips.
Madison wanted him more now than she ever had in the past. The past two kissing events they had nearly sent her begging for more, but this was a time and point in her sexual frustration with him she wasn't giving in to the logical side of herself. She pulled the bottom of his T-shirt up, silently pleading for him to take it off. His response was quick, and now she felt and tasted the scrumptiousness of his bared chest as she licked along the skin from his neck down to his hardening nipples. His grinding increased, and she felt her sweatshirt and bra being taken off and thrown to the side at a record-setting pace. His mouth moved down to where his fingers had teased before. Madison's breath was taken away as he skillfully bit and sucked on her puckered breasts.
After several minutes of this arousing foreplay, both Jacob and Madison lay completely unclothed together. The blanket and heat from his body kept her toasty amidst the chilled air of this Pennsylvania afternoon. Her legs were locked right above his buttocks, at the small of his back, and he continued to mimic a copulation movement without the penetrating factor.
"Tell me to stop," Jacob breathed huskily into her ear and continued kissing along her jawline and onto her neck. If she were to tell him to stop, this would make everything so much easier. Of course, he wanted nothing more than to claim to her, but there would be hell for both of them for not abiding by the elders' laws.
Madison shook her head and gripped his bare ass with her hands. She pulled him closer until his hardened member felt the moistened area begging to be filled.
With one quick thrust, Jacob filled her to the top. Madison let out a scream and shook beneath him. He was afraid he had hurt her, but he knew there was no other easier way. He knew she was a virgin by the talk he'd heard and the feelings and scent his wolf had picked up on. He lay motionless, still buried deep inside of her until the trembles of her body slowed.
Madison didn't think the first time would hurt as bad as it did, but she felt like her whole body had been split open. Now the pain was subsiding a new feeling was taking its place. The fire that began in the pit of her stomach spread rapidly to the area where Jacob still lay still. She started to slowly make small circles with her hips and grind herself into him more deeply.
His wolf could sense what their mate wanted, and Jacob obliged. The slow steadiness of their rhythm picked up to a hurried pace. Jacob wanted to please his mate on their first time together, but he didn't know if he'd be able to hold out long enough. He tr
ied to slow the quickness of the strokes, but Madison gripped him once again and urged him to continue.
He felt her explosion, and her body began to quiver as she rode out her first experience of an intercourse induced orgasm. His shoulder was near her mouth, and she bit down hard as the first wave rolled off of her. This act alone sent him spiraling out of control, and with one last deep plunge, he exploded deep inside of his still quivering mate. The intimacy and desire his wolf felt, and the realization she'd drawn first blood made him complete the bonding ritual. As he spilled his seed inside of her, his lips tasted the saltiness of her skin, then sharpened canine teeth grazed her shoulder and bit down to taste the blood of his forever mate.
Madison felt the initial sting of when Jacob bit her. She had tasted his blood in her mouth when she'd bit him during her rollercoaster ride of emotions and feelings that were sexually prompted, so she couldn't complain when he did the same. As he finished coming down from his climatic experience, Madison felt his labored breathing becoming more in control and steady. She rubbed his back and sensed his relaxation into her.
The blanket on top of them was pulled more securely around them as Jacob tried to block out the chilled air. Madison lay with him still positioned over her. She was waiting for him to say something… anything at all about this situation. Jacob nuzzled her neck, and she heard little snores.
Madison shook his arm. "Jacob."
"Hmm." That was the only response he could muster out. He had sex before, in fact, with multiple girls, but this experience with Madison and the bonding they did to unite them as mates had totally exhausted him. In fact, even his wolf was as tired as he was euphoric at the turn of events that went on today.
"You can't fall asleep. I have to get home soon. Plus, I need to wipe this blood dripping off my arm." Madison tried to move him with her one arm that wasn't pinned down.
The realization of what happened and the consequences that could materialize smacked Jacob in the head like a two-ton boulder. He scrambled up to a sitting position and wrapped the blanket around Madison as he stood and quickly threw on his clothes. Madison had begun to get dressed as he finished putting on his shirt.
