The Troll-Demon War Page 17

by Leah R. Cutter

The fighting in the street was fierce. Kimukaki of all sizes had already joined in, from the littlest pup to the oldest grandmother.

The ground rumbled, as if a slight earthquake had just occurred.

Suddenly, a second black portal opened up just a few blocks down from where Christine and Ozlandia stood. More demons came pouring out.

Though Christine couldn’t see a third portal opening, she still felt the ground tremble, announcing its presence.

  Suddenly, she realized her mistake.

The demons had never been planning on attacking in the places where they’d started. Those camps had been a distraction.

Christine had fallen for it, too. She’d stripped some of the planes of the kith and kin of their fiercest fighters, moving them out of place, so that they wouldn’t be able to protect their home worlds or their people.

Frustrated at being duped, Christine made the outline of a door with her hands, intending on creating a portal to take her back to the world where most of the Kimukaki were stationed.

  Her magic fizzled.

The only way out was through one of the demon portals.

She belatedly recalled that the Kimukaki, like most of the kith and kin worlds, had isolated themselves, thinking that they’d be protected.

The demons had obviously found a way around that. It struck Christine that the spell they’d used for the portal was similar to the spell used to cause eruptions of lava.

Only it had been twisted for eruptions of demons.

“Do we fight?” Ozlandia asked quietly.

Christine shook her head. “We have to get out. We have to get the word out. The demons are attacking all the worlds that we drew warriors out of.”

Ozlandia shuddered. She threw a questioning look at Christine, who slowly nodded.

“Yes. We’ve failed. The Great War has begun.”
