“I just need a little more time,” he said, burying his face in my dark hair.
He was pleading with me.
I really did have power over him. I just felt like it wasn’t enough to sustain me.
“Okay,” I said at last. “I’ll give you some more time. Please share your ideas and plans with me, though, all right?”
“Yesss,” he said, as if he’d just won a game. He smiled at me, kissing me on both cheeks and then on my lips. “I promise I’ll share things with you more now. Just stop me if it ever gets too boring or grisly for you. I saw the way you looked after I killed Sam.”
I made a face and he pointed.
“Yeah, exactly like that.” He laughed a little. “I sometimes forget how sensitive human stomachs can be.”
“Ha, ha, laugh it up,” I said, though I was smiling at him now. Later, when he wasn’t with me again, I would go back to feeling anxious and unworthy, but for now, I felt like I was the queen of the dragons once again. I felt like I could handle anything whenever he was with me and boosting me up.
I hugged him then, and the feel of his arms around me made me feel better again. It was almost as if his scales contained serotonin. “I’ll give you more time, but not too much more,” I said to him. “I’ve never been known for my patience. Wait til you see me on Christmas. At least in the meantime I have a laptop I can play with.”
With that, I went off to my dungeon in the den so that I could continue my extracurricular activity: researching dragon shifters throughout the greater Chicago area.
I wasn’t going to be any use to them if I didn’t know who the potential friends and enemies were.
