They guided the young women to the opposite sides of the table.
“Lay down.” Matt gave Harmony’s back a gentle push. When her upper body was flat on the wooden surface, he lifted her skirt and laid it over her back.
When Melody was in the same position, the two women grabbed hands.
“Ten with a wooden spoon,” Mitch explained. “No matter the reason, no matter how much you want to do something or go somewhere, your safety comes first.”
“Do you understand?” Matt asked. “We spank you because we love you, because we want you to be safe and healthy. You two could have been killed today. In fact, you nearly were.” The blood drained from his face at the memory. “A man can’t let that pass.”
He rubbed the back of the spoon across his wife’s pale buttocks. Mitch followed his example. He gave a nod, and Mitch lifted his spoon and brought it down on his wife’s bottom. The round, red, angry imprint appeared on her skin. Melody lifted her body off the table, but Mitch laid a restraining hand on her back, and she lay down. Tears dripped down her cheeks onto the table’s surface.
When Melody settled, Matt lifted his spoon and the crack of the impact on his wife’s bottom echoed around the room.
“No, Matt, it hurts,” Harmony shrieked.
“I’m sure it does, darlin’. I’m sure it does.”
Another nod from Matt, and Mitch laid the second stroke on his wife’s bottom. She squirmed and stamped her feet. Her bottom waved in the air.
Not being cruel men, they increased the pace of punishment, but they delivered all ten spanks. The message was too important. Their wives were too dear.
Matt lifted Harmony in his arms and carried her to a big chair where he could cuddle her in his arms. It took a while for the wailing to stop, but he finally dried the last tears, and laid reassuring kisses on her swollen eyes.
“Now for the good news,” Matt said.
Melody and Harmony raised their heads from where they rested on their husband’s broad chests.
“You have good news?” Harmony’s blue eyes sparked with interest.
Matt laughed. “We said so before the spanking.”
“I think I was too scared to listen,” Harmony said.
“First, I’m going to resign as sheriff,” Matt began.
“You are? Don’t you love being the sheriff?”
“I used to. But I don’t want a dangerous job now. Every Saturday night, I take guns away from men who are drunk or angry or both. I break up fights. Arrest men none too happy to be headed for a cell.” He gathered her close and nuzzled her ear. “I want a long life with you. I won’t leave you a widow if I can help it,” Matt explained.
Mitch continued, “The best part is that Matt bought the one-hundred-acre parcel we’ve been wanting. He’s adding it to the ranch, and we’re going to build you a house right here at Journey’s End.”
“Really, Matt?” Harmony twisted to look into her husband’s eyes.
“Yup,” he assured her. “We know that you and Melody need to be close. I can’t say I understand it, but it’s a feeling so powerful neither of you can resist. I expect that’s not the last spanking I’ll give you, but it’s the last one caused by separation from Melody.”
“When, Matt, when can we move here?” Harmony wiggled free of her husband’s arms and searched his face.
“Well, my deputy can take over as sheriff. He’s a good man, but I’ll need to stay until they find him a new deputy. It wouldn’t be fair to just walk out on him. I hope within two weeks.” He heaved a sigh. “If it’s all right with Mitch, you can stay here until I can leave. I’ll come out as often as I can. You will not wander off down that road by yourself ever again.”
Harmony’s eyes filled to overflowing. “Matt, thank you. It’s the most wonderful idea anyone ever had, ever. I’m so grateful you understand, but I don’t want to be apart from you. Now that I know it won’t be forever, I’ll be good. I won’t leave without you or without your permission.”
Mitch stood with Melody snug in his arms. “While we build your house, you can live with us.” He pointed in the direction of the spare bedroom. “Start tonight. It’s too late to go to town now, and we’re all tired.” His jaw dropped into a cavern of a yawn.
Before they disappeared into their room, Mitch turned one last time. “Congratulations,” he said. “You’ve reached it.”
“Reached what?” Harmony asked.
“The end of your trail. Your happily ever after. Your Journey’s End.” Mitch carried Melody into their room and closed the door with a firm click.
“The end of our trail,” Matt whispered. A journey sweetened by family, and sugared by sharing.
“Our happily ever after.” Harmony held her husband’s hand between both of hers and squeezed.
“Our Journey’s End,” they repeated in a single voice.
