“Niall Burns is a man who never forgets nor forgives,” Hayes said. “He better never find out that I’m the one who brought you this information, Marcus. In fact, I think it might be best if I just get the heck out of Dodge for a while. Most likely forever.”
I nodded and stood. Hayes appeared to be more than happy to also rise and move quickly to the front door. He opened it and let himself out, closing the door softly behind him. I returned to the table and sank back into my chair, my emotions roiling as I stared at the three folders on the table in front of me.
I didn’t know how long I stared at those folders as the minutes and then the hours slowly ticked by. I wanted to read those reports, to learn everything. But at the same time, I hesitated, knowing that the moment I pulled out the first document, everything would change.
I would know the truth. I would make my own judgments.
I was torn.
Had Niall given the order to have my parents killed? And if so, why pull me into the organization? Why raise me in the Outfit. Why appoint me leader over them years later? It didn’t make sense.
Was it all a sham? When I left a board meeting, did Niall and the other board members sit around the table, chuckling at what a sap I was? Could that ever happen?
No, I didn’t think it was possible. I had run the Outfit for five years. They never would have allowed that if they didn’t think I had the balls to be the leader. So, what was going on?
My mind raced. Anger, disbelief, pain, and outrage, over, and over, and over again. Allie had been right. Loath as I was to believe it, Niall had been controlling me for the past twenty-five years.
Why?
Some kind of twisted game of revenge? Why wait five years to order a hit on me if that was so? What would it have gained Niall to put me in charge all these years if he didn’t believe in me? Why risk the Outfit with someone you…
I shook my head. My thoughts roamed toward crazy ideas. No. Niall would not have put me in charge if he didn’t think I was fit. Maybe he did it to atone for killing my parents. Then again, maybe Hayes was wrong, and Niall hadn’t been the one to order my parents’ death. I would only know the facts once I read the reports.
Either way, I felt oddly lost, adrift. It couldn’t be true. But if it was…
I might have given Allie the impression that I was planning on walking away from this life, this life of violence, but this information changed everything. If Niall Burns was behind the death of my parents…if he had ordered the hit and then turned me into a killer, a man of violence, the leader of the Philly Outfit itself in some sort of cruel joke on me, I wouldn’t rest until I had my revenge.
I wouldn’t rest until I’d killed one more time.
