Look Inside
"Hello there, little rabbit." The man looms in front of her, huge and terrifying. "What's a little bunny like you doing out here all alone? Don't you know it's not safe for prey like you out there?"
"I um- I'm just here for the event," she stutters. "If you could point me in the direction of my hotel, that would be very helpful," she says, hoping her ears are properly tucked under her hair and they can't see them. Apparently city folks are weird about Shifters like her, which was why Darnell had been so wary about letting her out of the hotel.
"Aren't you sweet?" The man sneers, looming in front of her, closing in and grabbing her wrist hard enough to hurt.
"Please let go," she says, her heartbeat going too fast. "I- Please," she whimpers, eyes filling with tears. She can hold onto her shift easier now that she's older, but she's fast forgetting how to keep in control because she's really scared right now.
"Why would I do that? Sweet little thing like you," he drawls, leaning in and licking a wet strip up her cheek.
It's really gross and she pulls away, cheeks going bright red with humiliation. The other werewolves are closing in now too, trapping her between them to give her the feeling of prey being surrounded. It's terrifying. Her breath hitches and her eyes burn with tears. She wipes away the saliva on her cheek with the back of her hand. She doesn't like the he smells like cigarette smoke.
He yanks her close, pulling their bodies closer together and then he shifts partially so that his fingers turn into sharp claws right in front of her eyes. She thinks of hitting him and running away but she's outnumbered like this. She closes her eyes and grimaces when she feels him comb through her hair, tips of his claws cutting through her hair band like it's made of paper. Her hair tumbles out from the ponytail and her rabbit ears drop down. A whine escapes her throat. Her ears fold back, and she trembles quietly, panicking.
"Jesus-" "Oh my god." "What the-"
She closes her eyes, heart beating so hard she's afraid it would break through her rib cage and abandon her.
"Aren't you just lovely," he grins, and she can feel his breath on her cheek, burning hot and smelling like cigarette smoke and danger. Her ears are folded all the way back pressing into her ear, so his words have a sort of echo to them.
She yelps when he clutches her long ears in his palm and tugs her head back, exposing her bare neck to him and looking at her like he's trying to find the best place to slit her neck. It hurts to have her ears tugged like this.
Tears trickle down the side of her face and he leans in to capture the teardrop on his tongue. Her skin feels clammy where his tongue touches her. She wipes it away with the back of her hand again, not wanting his scent on her. It doesn't just smell wrong. It feels wrong, like it's not meant to be there. She knows wolves mark their possession with scent and he's trying to mark her.
"You smell a little bit like wolf, little rabbit," he says. "I thought you were just a little werewolf girl. Who knew?" he looks a little bit crazed, his eyes shining brightly, his upper lip pulled back into a cruel grin. "And you're unclaimed," he grins.
"I'm not," she lies weakly.
"You're going to catch a high price at the market. But maybe we can play with you a little before we send you there," he says, his voice dropping low. He leans in close; mouth parted a little bit like he's going to kiss her and the idea of his lips on hers makes her blood run cold.

Chapter One: Holiday
Ally enjoys her sleepy town in the middle no nowhere for the most part. Her family and her lives far enough away from the other predator shifters that she doesn't have to worry about her prey instincts being pulled to the surface.
Going to school is something of an annoyance though, since she has to wake up hours before her classmates and make the long, long trek to the nearest bus station an hour away in order to be picked up by the bus driver. And having to get along with her classmates was kind of annoying in the beginning too since there weren't any other Shifters in school and she's the only Rabbit Shifter in their year. There's a Wolf Shifter a few years older than her, but he was too cool to be friendly with someone like her. At least he was in the beginning. They've gotten pretty close over the years, though, and he was strong-armed into joining the sporting event along with several other of her older classmates.
She feels kind of homesick already. She's the baby in the family and she's never strayed so far from home before.
As if reading her mind, he drapes an arm around her shoulder and presses on the side of her cheek until she's resting her head on his shoulder. "Go to sleep, bunny," he says beside her, his voice sleep-ridden deep, a little bit rumbling.
"I'm not sleepy," she says. It's a little scary, being so close to him for so long because of the wolf under his skin, but at least his wolf isn't as obvious as her rabbit. She wonders if he's feeling hungry, smelling her for so long. It's hard to sleep with a predator so close, but his scent is better than the others. There are other predator shifters on the bus with them.
They're travelling further from her home than she's ever been. She's eighteen now, which means she no longer need her parents supervision to leave her home. At least not for short periods of time and this is supposed to be a really short trip.
The only reason why she had been allowed to leave at all was because they know Darnell is going on the trip too and he wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. Darnell's a werewolf and good friends with her older brothers. They barter sometimes, him exchanging the He's working at his family estate now. They're a family of hunters.
Everyone's very protective of her because she's the baby in the family. Also, because the rabbit gene in her is stronger than anyone else they know. Most shifters keep their animals hidden inside of them, barely visible on most days and are only able to shift maybe partially. Ally's rabbit is on the surface of her skin, impossible to ignore and easy to spot.
When Ally's stunned, she yelps and shifts completely, turning into a fluffy white rabbit. It's a useless defense mechanism because then, she'll be all curled up and useless. It's kind of pathetic. Her brothers used to make a game out of getting her to shift when she was a baby, learning only once they've gotten older that it's dangerous because after she shifts, she's a rabbit with a beating rabbit heart and panicking rabbit mind. She would run if they accidentally let her out like that, though being at home helps cause she knows she's safe here. But her parents forbade them from scaring her in public.
They only needed to properly scared once for them to stop doing it entirely. She had been five and her brothers thought it would be funny to get her to shift while they
are out tending their family's vegetable farm. She's never shifted outdoors before and panicked, sprint-hopping over their garden into the forest floor.
It had taken the whole village a week to find her, burrowed in a little hole she had burrowed. She had gotten bitten by a number of small critters, leaving patches of her fur torn out and bleeding sluggishly. If they haven't found her that day, the village doctor says they would have lost her.
The bus bumps along the road and she's grateful for Darnell's arm tightening around her to keep her from falling off the seat. It's an old bus, one that makes a lot of noise as it moves and doesn't feel very steady, but it's the best they have in their little village.
"You alright?" he asks. His heartbeat is steady and calming, so she focuses on that.
"I'm fine," she murmurs when she realizes he's waiting for an answer. She's never liked travelling and she knows the rest of her teammates aren't faring much better. They're mostly human with a few cat and wolf shifters among them and none of them are used to travelling so far away from home. The predator shiters must have it worse, leaving their territories like this. None of them are over thirty, though, and aren't old enough to own their own territories yet. They don't generally have their own land until they're married with a family of their own and then, it'll be mostly impossible to have them leave their nest.
It's the first time she's gone so far. They left the town premises eight hours ago and they're still inside the bus, trudging steadily towards their destination. Their initial enthusiasm at the trip have long since ebbed away, replaced by pure exhaustion and boredom. Even the rest stops they were impressed by in the beginning of their trip have lost their freshness.
They just want to get there.
By the time the driver pulls up at the parking lot of their hotel, they are so happy that they spill out of the door the second it opens, some of them even abandoning their bags in favor of a breath of fresh air.
The trip is supposed to be a week-long trip in order for the neighboring towns to get to know each other better. "It's a friendly sports event, that's all," her gym teacher had said when he pitched the idea to the sports team at their school. But that hadn't stopped his eyes from gleaming when he told them about the big dinner he would treat them to in the city an hour's drive from the school if they win him most of the events, or their mayor from sending most of the shifters in their village who are able to spare a week because some of them are faster, stronger, and better at sports.
All Ally has to do when she's running is imagine a predator shifter running after her and her heart will pump faster, adrenaline coursing through her veins pushing her to run as fast as she can.
There are a few students from her school here since it's easier for them to take the time off, but most of her teammates are slightly older, having taken a few days off their busy schedule in order to participate in the event. It's a good networking opportunity too. They have another bus of farmers and hunters who will be exchanging information with the business people here so that they could barter and trade in the future. Maybe they can convince some entrepreneurs to bring their businesses to their little village.
It's the first time an event like this is arranged. Apparently some big-shot billionaire in some city thought it would be a good idea to get all the different villages together so they're not so isolated. Something to do with fostering relationships and helping them grow.
Ally takes a deep, deep breath the moment she steps out of the bus but she's not trying to replace the recycled air in her lungs. She's trying to figure out if there are any shifters in this proximity, if she could pick up the scent of other predator or prey shifters who've come from different areas. She so rarely gets to meet other shifters.
She has her hair tied back and her rabbit ears folded between her hair carefully to keep them hidden. She's wearing baggy clothes too in order to hide her more animal characteristics. Mostly, she worries about her tail being seen. It's small enough to be hidden if she wears a dress. She's kind of glad that she grew into it and it's easier to hide now. It was all kinds of humiliating when she was younger and the kids were cruel and would tug at her tail since it's uncomfortable to keep it hidden. Her mom would cut a hole in her skirts and dresses so her tail can poke out, and then kids would make a game out of pulling it. They've stopped doing that ever since Darnell sort of adopted her as the little kid sister he's never had.
Howard, their gym teacher has a soft spot for her and used to get the older kids to make sure none of the students her year would mess with her and that's how she ended up with Darnell as a sort of bodyguard at school.
"You alright?" Darnell asks, his head tilted a little in the sort of way that tells her he's trying to pick up her heartbeat and make sure she's not panicking.
"I'm fine," she rolls her eyes. Sometimes, he's even more overprotective than even her brothers. They would be here too if they aren't all married with their own burrows to take care of.
The driver drops out of the bus and opens the compartment space. Darnell goes to get their bags while she looks around, trying to familiarize herself with the new scents. The hotel they're staying at looks expensive. She's never seen a building so tall or imposing before, all glass and metal, so devoid of the greens and browns that she's used to seeing at her village. The light coming from the reception office is a glaring bright yellow that hurts her eyes a little bit.
She feels the hair on the back of her neck rise and her prey instincts cause her heartbeat to go erratic and fast. She looks up at one of the windows of the hotel and sees that she's being watched. There must have been some sort of conference taking place because she can see a lot of people sitting around an oval table. There's a man standing by the window, eyes glued to her. Even from this far away, she can tell he's a predator of some sort. Her rabbit ears twitch and she brings a hand over her head, trying to hide it without thinking.
She's not sure if she's imagined it or if he had really smirked at the sight of her. His eyes are dark and foreboding, pupils dilated and, as she continued to watch, completely captivated by the strange man, she sees his lip pull back into an unmistakable smirk. It's only a little bit frightening.
She considers waving at him, but Darnell materializes beside her before she can do anything she will regret later and she thanks him for getting her bags for her. There aren't that many.
The sky is starting to grow dim, sun sinking into the horizon and taking daylight away with it.
"Is there anything wrong?" Darnell asks abruptly and she realizes she hadn't been paying attention to what he was saying.
"Nothing's wrong," she lies, unable to keep herself from glancing back up at the window. Darnell follows her gaze up, but the man had taken his seat and has his back against them.
He frowns at the window before turning back at her with a light smile. "I think you'll be rooming with the Montoya sisters. You're alright with that?"
They're human and they're pretty nice. "It's fine." She shrugs, not really understanding why he looked so disappointed with her answer.
Chapter Two: Exploring
The hotel is really impressive, bright lights and expensive-looking furniture everywhere. She doesn't know what to do with herself and keeps herself all curled up, trying to take up as little space as possible. Her mom had sent her out with her best dresses and most comfortable running attire. She's wearing a dress that her sister-in-law had given her. It's wrinkled up in places and hugs her breasts a little too tightly, but the important point is that the base flares out and hides her fluffy rabbit tail.
She's sharing the room with three women that she doesn't know very well. They're already discussing among themselves excitedly so she excuses herself after getting her bag settled in to explore around the hotel. It's all very new and exciting for her.
Darnell seems to have the same idea because he's waiting for her at the elevator, arms folded and frown etched in place.
"What's wrong?" she asks.
"They cancelled our me
eting with the organizer," he says. "He was held up."
"He'll show up tomorrow right" she says, trying to make him feel better. She knew how much he was looking forward to seeing him. Apparently, the man's a self-made billionaire who hailed from a village much like theirs, making a name for himself despite all the cards stacked against him. The fact that he's an Alpha Werewolf only makes Darnell idolize him even more.
"It's not the same," he says- pouts really.
She can't help but laugh at him a little bit as she walks over him to press the button on the elevator. He follows her in when it gets there.
"You should talk to him. He has a vested interest in shifters like you."
Her ear twitches, like they know he's talking about them. There are always people who think that because she has long bunny ears and a round fluffy tail, she's more animal than human and have specific and frankly, quite disturbing fetishes about her. She shakes her head. It doesn't matter, really. "You're the smart one, Dan. I'm happy farming the rest of my life in the village," she says. "Maybe get married when my heat finally comes and have my own burrow." She's kind of looking forward to getting her own warren. She sees her brothers with their little burrows and all her little nieces and nephews and hopes her heat will come a little bit earlier... even though she's kind of terrified of being claimed. There aren't that many shifters in her village and she's not sure who's going to come for her.
It's different with her brothers. They knew who they wanted as their mates and went after them. Most of them had traveled to different villages to find their does- their wives. She hopes she can get her own buck one day, but she doesn't really know how it works. Her brothers had taken them home and started their burrows near their parent's, so maybe some buck is going to come and take her away from home too. Would her mate see her rabbit ears and think there's something wrong with her and not want her? She worries about that, sometimes.
