Murder at the Wine Tasting Page 9

“You two can’t take anything seriously.” She threw up her arms in mock anger. “How on earth do you survive?”

“One day at a time, Cammy,” Margie said, wiping tears of joy mingled with tears of sadness from her eyes. “I will miss you both. So very, very much.”

“I’ll write you dear, if you send me an address,” Camelia said, throwing her arms around Margie’s neck. “I’ll write you as often as I can.”

“And so will I,” Ray said, throwing his arms around both of them and squeezing them together. “I owe you big for this last case, Margie. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Margie puffed out her chest. “That’s right. And don’t you forget it.”

When they could delay no longer, they all embraced one last time. Margie picked up her bag, hauling it through the gate and onto the plane. Her chest felt tight, and her knees felt a little wobbly, but otherwise she was okay. She wiped away her tears, pretending not to notice when the others did the same. She waved one last time, then walked around the corner and onto the plane.

She took her seat by the window, mentally preparing herself for several hours in a very small space. Margie had never flown before, and she was fascinated by all the people getting on board. She made up stories about each one of them, wondering where they came from and why they flew so far. Some had the relief of someone finally on vacation. Others looked like they were still in the board room, checking their watches and adjusting their silk ties.

Eventually, Margie, her eyes dry from trying to take in everything at once, fell into an exhausted sleep. She’d not slept a wink the night before in fear of missing her flight and was so very tired.

And when she woke, they were descending into her new home. Margie’s eyes ran over the sparkling blue water and the warm, green plethora of flora and fauna. It looked like an overgrown garden that had been left for years without tending. The waters looked like they were filled with sparkling jewels, the sands were soft and white. Waves crashed over the sands in white capped glory. Margie was fascinated. She’d never seen the sea, and she couldn't wait to dip her toes in. It was like a beautiful postcard, so colorful and bright.

She was going to be living here. Her eyes ran over the paradise over and over again, a smile breaking over her features. She was finally home.
